The newest star on the firmament of Liverpudlian music is a particular beast. Crazy, eccentric, funny, abstract but also intriguing, unique and fascinating in equal measures. The duo is composed of veterans of indie scenes: singer/songwriter Em-Lee and multi-instrumentalist and producer Zak. Together they create something that will make you dance, weep or wonder at the state of the world – depending on the wind direction, Mercury retrograde or the day of the week. We sat down with the band a few days before their Manchester debut at the Peer Hat to talk about their music, plans and everything else.
Your bio calls you “psychedelic duo from another dimension”. Please introduce yourselves to the readers of Indieterria. Who is in the band and what instruments do you play?
Majenta Bleu: Howdy, nice to meet you. Our names are Zak and Em-Lee. Zak is playing the xylophone and Em-Lee plays the triangle with the occasional songwriting!
A good name is half the way to success in show business. And we absolutely love the band’s name!
Majenta Bleu: Thank you so much for the compliment! The name has been getting mixed reviews, particularly on Mondays for some reason. You are talking to us on Wednesday.
Were you named after a colour or the rambler rose known for its incredibly vibrant flowers?
Majenta Bleu: Neither, we felt the name represented us as two people from two completely different parts of the world coming together.
We noticed jiǎnhuàzì characters (simplified Chinese) in your logo that translate to “Majenta Blue”. Is there a reason why you have added them?
Majenta Bleu: The jiǎnhuàzì characters are a homage to Zak’s heritage. It’s important to us as individuals to pay tribute to our families and our communities as a whole.
Majenta Bleu’s style has been described as an “alternative music with sprinkles of Latin, funk, soul, rock and classical”. That’s a very eclectic mix. Do you agree with this description?
Majenta Bleu: It really depends what day of the week it is! Sometimes we want to get funky, other days we want to head bang.
We are not keen on TikTok but sometimes kids on there can be very witty. One concertgoer noticed that you described yourselves as an “extraterrestrial psychedelic pop duo from another dimension” and promptly nicknamed you “Mulder and Scully of Liverpool”. So tell us is the truth out there?
Majenta Bleu: The truth IS out there and you weren’t supposed to know that we work for the FBI!
Zak – a question especially for you. In one of your social media posts, you confessed that you have been working on your music for months and that the material was the best you have ever recorded. Tell us about the music. Are you about to release a debut EP already, or will you be releasing singles for now?
Majenta Bleu: We don’t like to talk about things that aren’t completed yet, but we’ve been busy behind the scenes collaborating with a range of different people. All we will say is, keep an eye out on our socials. You might find yourself having nightmares around Christmas time. Zak had so much fun during the creative process working on every single one of these originals with Em-Lee from beginning to end.
You debuted in May at the Liverpool Arc:Hive playing at the Noisy Weekender alongside our absolute favourites, JW Paris. How do you recall your first gig? Glorious mess or a display of genius?
Majenta Bleu: Noisy Weekender was an extraordinary place to debut. We are very grateful to have performed amongst some great bands. We had a lot of fun in May, but now it’s time to unleash the full Majenta Bleu experience!
Recently you played a show as a fully fledged band. Tell us who will be supporting you at future gigs. We want to learn more about your backing crew.
Majenta Bleu: We have our fave Manc Liam Kelly on drums and the wonderful jazzy Adam “Danger” Lewis on bass.
Any plans for the last three months of 2026? Any releases, upcoming gigs, anything that we should be aware of?
Majenta Bleu: You can catch our full band in Manchester at the Peer Hat on Thursday October the 1st. After that, keep an eye out for more shows across the country.
Last questions at Indieterria are fun. Let’s pretend that you have been asked to write the theme song for an animated movie like “Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem”. What’the title of your song?
Majenta Bleu: We’d call the song “666 – The Next Evolution of the Intergalactic Human Kind”.
