Notte Bianca Retrospective #6: Leo

We are back! After a day of break (to celebrate our birthday – we deserved a day off!) we are returning to our comfortable routine : ) Guestbook number 6 belongs to the mighty and cunning Leo! This post will be much longer than previous ones as Leo is a truly popular sign.  So many comments were left to describe the heavenly lions : D

Leo logo prepared for Notte Bianca, made by Rita and scanned by Mal

Leo, a symbol of the sun is considered as one of the oldest and the most powerful signs. Many astrologists consider them to be self centered, stubborn, lazy but also very loyal, warm-hearted, outgoing and (surprise!) daydreamers! Leo always have big plans and will go to great length to make the plans a reality. They do not accept defeat; they will try many times to achieve their goals. Success is not something that comes easily to them, but when it does, it is usually very spectacular – Leos became rich and famous! They will then shower their friends and family with gifts and presents! Well, let’s see what the Leos have to say about themselves.

Leo background written by Rita and scanned by Mal

The first comment in the guestbook was left by Ika. It states: “Leos are very caring, they think of the future (they are proactive), they like to stand in the limelight once in a while :$ Leo vs. Leo is a deadly match but others should be ok!”. Somebody else put a very funny comment below, completely agreeing with what Ika said by writing: “AGREED x2”.

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Second post comes from a Leo himself of herself. Leo wrote: “Leo – generous, brave, patient, symbol of justice, victory and courage. The Kind of the jungle ; D”. Yasser Arafat, Palestinian leader and the Laureate of the Nobel Prize was born on 24 August 1929.

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Another post was also contributed by a Leo, this time however, anonymously. It reads: “As a Leo, I always want to look my best. I like to be the centre of attention; I like to stand out in a positive way”. At the bottom of the page, a few words in Italian have been scribed: “Tutti I Leoni sono fiolare!” – “All Leos are…..”? If you can help us with the translation, let us know!!

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Most of the comment we have received sadly are contributed anonymously. The next is not an exception. The visitor has written: “Often physically attractive people. Bright and centre of any company. Passionate.” And yet again, another sentence has been added at the bottom of the page: “Leo… they are annoying”.

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Not everyone has the good opinions about Leos. The next visitor left a harsh note saying: “Leos are evil and selfish and they like to show off all the time”. Robert Redford, Patrick Swayze are among those Leos who are wildly admired for their charm and achievements. We say, there are 100 good Leos for every evil one!

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Complete different opinion has been presented in the following comment. Also anonymous guest think that: “Leos are honest people”. Magic Johnson, a famous basketball player, was not afraid to speak about HIV/AIDS in the early 90’s when the disease was still a social taboo.

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

One of the longest entries in Leo guestbook also came from an anonymous writer. The person shared a long list of traits what makes Leo so unique: “Leos are very loyal, passionate, romantic, stubborn and proud of what they do. Although being short-tempered, they calm after a short period of time. (They) are very curious and trustful. The Kings of the jungle!”.

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

A “Leo in love with Gemini” has summed his brothers and sisters with these words: “Short-tempered with close people, however very tolerant and kind-hearted”. Princess Royal Anne and her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth – The Queen Mother were known to have a difficult relationship with each other, they were however very close and supportive of their choices and plans.

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Leos can be very critical of themselves as well. Please read the comment left by another guest: “I am a Leo. And I am a human who tries to do the 50 times a day like Lions do…So far…Fail…” We are not sure, what is the thing that lions do 50 times a day, but we know they will do it until they succeed!

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Sometimes one comment can start a whole discussion! One guest half jokingly teased others by saying: “Leos feel they are the best…but they are not!”. A swift reply came within minutes: “I agree, they know it all and don’t listen to other’s point of view, so (they) won’t be advised!” Napoleon didn’t listen to anyone and became…. an Emperor 😀

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

The discussion continued on the second page. Third author participated by adding: “Agreed, Leos are loyal and selfish!” Loyalty and pride (sometimes mistaken for selfishness) are the traits of politicians, statesman and spies. Bill Clinton, Herbert Hoover and Mata Hari were of course Lions!

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Samir Hussain wrote one of the most personal comments in the book. He said: “Lions are very good, professional kind hearted, hard workers. However, they are unlucky in their life as they face a lot of difficulties and have to find their way through. Lions also have a very strong faith. Viva lions!”.

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

The last page shows a true, honest side of Lions. One of them confessed: “I try to help others when possible, enjoy meeting and connecting with as many people as possible. But I admit I’m very lazy 😛 “.Mick Jagger of Rolling Stones (and the Rest of the band) have been playing rock and roll for  nearly 50 years. You cannot be lazy doing that! You need to love it!

Leo guestbook page scanned by Malicia

And so we have reached the end of another book! In short: Leos are stubborn; they know what they want and what to do to get it. They do not need advice from anyone (some think this is their biggest fault!) and will always follow their own paths. Lions are individualists but with kind heart and sensitive nature. They can be lazy (and proudly admit that!) but when they work, they give their best. Born leaders – not followers. Kings and Queens or the urban jungle!

The Seventh sign on our list is the Libra, the symbol of justice!
Pay attention, the next blog is all about ya!

Notte Bianca Retrospective # 5: Gemini

Hi hi!

WOW! Quite hard to imagine we are writing a blog for the fifth star sign already! It’s been almost a week and we are still having so much fun! Today we have also scanned several other items related to Notte Bianca like tickets, official information booklet and several receipts. We will upload everything once all the guestbooks are here! And today’s entry is dedicated to the lovely Twins – two halves of the same whole!

Gemini logo prepared for Notte Bianca, made by Rita and scanned by Malicia

Gemini represents the dualist nature of the universe. You know – light and dark, day and night, love and hate, life and death….We could go on forever! People born under the sign are known to change quickly like the wind (their element is air!). They are usually calm, but in the next moment they could burn with anger! You gotta be careful around them. But they possess also amazing intuition, sense of justice, are faithful friends and tender parents. If you are looking for a business partner, a Gemini will be perfect for that role. So what makes the true Gemini? Are they really so full of contradictions? Let us see….

Gemini background written by Rita and scanned, as usual, by Mal. Did you notice that somebody drawn a smiling face on it?

The first comment left by J.C reads: “2 sides of a coin, the smallest things can change out moods from happy to sad and all the shades in between. One can be extremely caring and in the next (second) hateful or spiteful”. English supermodel Naomi Campbell is an extremely good example how quickly the Gemini can switch between moods. She is one of the hardest working models, yet has the reputation of a being easily angered. But her temperament adds to her charm we say!

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Another guest, Anna has given us a note in German. We translated it to: “Universal, interesting, optimistic, talented, funny, friendly, loves animals especially cats, pursuing their goals and aims, intelligent and many, many more”. She also added: “Open-minded, tolerant with a good heart”. And just to prove her point, Anna has left a drawing of a heart pierced by an arrow!

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

The first anonymous post regarding Gemini is very short: “Creative, kind hearted, free spirited at times”. Freedom is very important to Gemini. Please take a look at American actor and musician Johnny Depp. Despite very successful career, Johnny thinks that his biggest success is staying away from Hollywood! He lives a very normal life with his partner Vanessa Paradis and two children in France, far away from the show business, and he is still a part of it! Can anyone beat that?

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Comment left by Maite from Spain is probably the shortest so far. It says: “We are the best : )”. Well, if you put it this way…we have nothing to add!

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

A post signed with unreadable signature (what a shame, we’d love to know your names people!!) is more philosophical than previous ones: “There is no black and white, only shades of gray!” Indeed, it is not so easy to judge a person, especially as complex as Gemini. Whatever they do, it cannot be simply classified as good or bad. Clint Eastwood has won a universal acclaim by portraying ambiguous characters – he is also a Gemini by birth!

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Antonia shared a nice and a bit personal comment with us writing that Gemini are: “Very moody but (it is) very, very, very nice to stay in their company and when they fall in love with something or somebody it’s the world!” Antonia is not mentioning if she is a Gemini herself, but when a Gemini falls in love, nothing can stop them. Angelina Jolie is a good example!

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

We have tried to translate the next comment, left to us in Italian, but Google translator is useless : D it says: “I Gemelli – su faccioli!”. If anyone knows what that means, please let us know!

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

We are back to English again! One page, two authors. The first said: “Smart, musician, romantic, that’s all!”. The second added: “Positive person, intelligent, lovable”. The sentence ends with a heart symbol, just to emphasize how lovely the Twins truly are. We must agree – there are many musicians born under this sign. They are not your average, silly songstresses or pop starlets – they are the bards like Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan.

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Maltese visitor – F. Demicoli – described his opinion about the Twins: “Gemini are very friendly and tolerant. They match with people of different characters”. Did you know that Queen Victoria and Artur Conan Doyle were known to have friends in all circles and of almost all nationalities?

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

The last page was written by three different people. Salib Mirza wrote a very intriguing comment: “Clouded maze of electrical thought”.  Maria Gatt was more conventional stating: “All the opposites in one person, both positive and negative”. The last, entry said “Gifted, talented but not always finish the things (tasks, ideas) they started. They understands others, they are caring but sometimes egoists”.

Gemini guestbook page scanned by Malicia

As usually, the best comments are the last ones. So who is a Gemini? A person of many interests and with friends in all the right places. Moody, but adapts quickly. Changeable but always the same, positive and negative at the same time. It’s hard to get to know them, but once you do, you gain a truly wonderful friend or a partner for life!

5 signs done, 7 more to go!
Up next – the mighty Leo!

See ya tomorrow kids,
Rita plus Mal D.

Notte Bianca Retrospective # 4: Capricorn

Hiya everybody!

Another day, another guestbook! Notte Bianca 2011 was a great event for us. Months of preparation and now lots to share with you all. Every page brings something new, with every comment we seem to know you better, we learn about others and about ourselves. Art has a unique way to bringing people together!

Capricorn logo prepared for Notte Bianca, made by Rita and scanned by Mal

Capricorn is the fourth guestbook we would like to show you today. The sea goat or terrestrial goat, as it is called sometimes, is an Earth sign ruled by the Planet Saturn. What does the horoscope say about people born under this sign? Capricornians are individualists, with keen eye for details and vivid imagination. If you want to have the time of your life, invite a Capricorn to a party or holidays! They will turn it into the wildest adventure (yet very, very comfortable one!) that would make Lara Croft and Indiana Jones jealous : D But, is that true? We will take a look at what Capricorns think about themselves!

Capricorn background written by Rita and scanned again by Malicia

The fist entry shows that Capricorns not only have a great sense of humor but they enjoy playing with words, creating unique statements. Coltle from Derby wrote:
 “Communicators, Calculators,
   Capable Caressers
   Completely Compressed
   Coagulated `C’s`
P.S. I forgot Communicating!”

Capricorn guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Second comment came from anonymous visitor who added: “Kind-hearted and caring. Very forgiving and peaceful. Don’t like confrontations and arguments. People pleaser. Not the brightest bulbs or wittiest of the lot. Stubborn and hard-headed”. Capricorns also have very good manners as the comments ends with “Have a nice day!” 🙂

Capricorn guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Similar sentiments are also visible in the next comment – also written by an anonymous person. The entry reads: “Strong characters with a kind heart. Always there to help others in need. Money makers”. It is true. The legendary Elvis Presley, one of the richest musicians in the world was born on January 8th 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Capricorn guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Our next guest, a lady named Carol Dickson, born on 29th of December 1945, has left us a comment proving that Capricorns are also musically talented. She said: “Hard working, musical, exceptional, hot headed, very passionate etc, etc”. Passion is the mother of artists. Joan Baez, Marilyn Manson, Zack De La Rocha from Rage Against the Machine, Michael Stipe of R.E.M and Rod Stewart, they all have created whole new genres with their music!

Capricorn guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Talking about talents! Capricorns are also very good painters. Dave from Oxford has left us a truly charming sample of his talent along with this comment: “Happy people with the hearts of gold!”. Henry Valentine Miller, famous US writer and painter and Japanese “father of anime” Hayao Miyazaki are the greatest examples!

Capricorn guestbook page scanned by Malicia

The next entry is also decorated with a crafty sketch. However it was written in Italian and we are unable to translate it. The signature is also very hard to decipher. But art does not need words to tell us what it means. We understand that Capricorns are good at everything they do, multitalented you could say! So please take a look yourself!

Capricorn guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Our next guest left a very short, but accurate post: “Thoughtful people, good listeners”. J.RR Tolkien and A.A Milne were known to be great listeners. They collected stories and funny anecdotes heard from people and friends. They have used them later to create two of the most popular books ever – “Lord of the Rings” (and the whole Middle-Earth) and “Winnie-the-Pooh”.

Capricorn guestbook page scanned by Malicia

Despite their talents, Capricorns can have a dark side as well. Another visitor thought that Capricorns have a very good memory. According to the entry, they are “People with strong character and kind heart. They hardly forgive and forget offences”. We cannot agree this is a fault as both, Mal and Rita, are Scorpions and we also never forgive and forget. What’s worse, we always pay back twice as much as we received! In our books a good memory is a true blessing!

Capricorn guestbook page scanned by Malicia

The last page of the guestbook was shared by two authors. One of them was born on 2nd of January 1985 and wrote one word “SMART!!!!”. The other left a well summarizing entry in French that can be easily translated to: “Genius! Super! Lots of emotions!”. What more can be said?

Capricorn guestbook page scanned by Malicia

All right! Now we know that Capricorns are simply brilliant. Thoroughly talented, kind-hearted, caring and passionate. Once hurt, they will remember the offence for long and one may never win their trust and friendship again. As gentle souls, they can co-exist with all kinds of people.
Tomorrow we will take a closer look at the Twins – the Gemini!
Have a good day :p

Notte Bianca Retrospective # 3: Cancer

Hello all!

We are slowly going through the scanned pages from all guestbook and we cannot believe how much work you have put into your entries! It is heart warming to read all your stories, comments and personal insights. We are truly proud and grateful at the same time!

Cancer logo prepared for Notte Bianca, made by Rita and scanned by Mal

The third guestbook that we would like to show you is the book of Cancer. The witty, self-reliant crab is respected for its strong character and powerful yet a bit cutting sense of humor! Cancer is the only Zodiac sign ruled by the Moon. Are Cancers unique then? Let’s find out!

Cancer background leaflet written by Rita and scanned by Malicia

The first comment about Cancer comes from Sidonia born on 10th of July 1977: “I like to be Cancer. Calm, creative, interested in arts. Family is important for me”. Cancers are said to go to great lengths for their family members. Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected South African president, spent 27 years in jail imprisoned for his was an anti-apartheid activism. Unable to see his children and wife, he kept writing letters to them even if they could not read this. After his release, the letters and diaries have been given to his children.

Cancer guestbook page scanned by Mal

Second page of the guestbook has been shared by two authors – sadly they did not leave their signatures. The first, we are guessing is a woman, wrote:
“My Cancer Men,
Loves: Music – The Beatles
            1967 – Best year
            Family Life
            Ten Pin Bowling
Likes Indian Dishes

The second one jokingly admitted: “Don’t like waters! Am I really the Cancerian?!”

Cancer guestbook page scanned by Mal

Another person is definitely not a Cancer, but he decided to share this with us: “Many of my friends are Cancers. I can’t say they are gifted or talented but kind hearted and good friends”. We dare to say that the biggest talent a person can possess is to be a good friend! Good friends are rare and should be treasured. If anyone is looking for a friend, please take a good look at Cancers!

Cancer guestbook page scanned by Mal

Other visitor named Joe posted a short list of 5 Cancer traits. They are: “Nervous, helpful, loveable, sensitive, and amazing”. Amazing is the right word to describe such Cancerians as Robin Williams, Raymond Chandler, Tom Hanks or Pablo Neruda. Good job, Joe!

Cancer guestbook page scanned by Mal

It’s a great shame that many people sign their entries using only their unreadable signatures. Next person who left his or her comment is no exception. It reads: “Open minded, helpful, nervous at times”. As we cannot recognize the signature, we are unable to say if this statement comes from a lady or gentleman. But we agree wholeheartedly with it none the less! Both, the guitar legend Carlos Santana and American alternative music veteran Beck, are admitting to still being nervous before concerts. What’s more, they also insist that the key to their success is to be open-minded!

Cancer guestbook page scanned by Mal

Surprisingly, according to out two next guests (also anonymous) Cancers are not nervous at all! The first comment contradicts the previous entry saying: “Calm, Kind, Generous”. Second person adds: “Love people, good at many things, sometimes lucky, many times not!!”. Some Cancers seem to be incredible lucky. Esther “Eppie” Lederer (original “Ann Lauders” now known as “Dear Margo”) and her identical twin sister Pauline Phillips (original “Dear Abby”) managed to run their advice-giving empires for more than 60 years! Both columns are now being run by their daughters!

Cancer guestbook page scanned by Mal

Klaudia, another “Notte Bianca” guest and contributor to this guestbook, left a cute, comical drawing of herself! She wrote: “Me (arrow pointing) Sensitive, Life Observer, like odd, different (things)”. Good news Klaudia! You are not alone! The (in)famous singer turned actress Courtney Love is known to be a fan of everything that’s odd!

Cancer guestbook page scanned by Mal

Even more humor can be found in Matt’s comment on another page. Matt wrote: “I hate leaving the house. I prefer to stay home and eat mozzarella sticks”.  The entry is accompanied by as described by the author “bad drawing of a crab”. We love the drawing but we are puzzled why somebody else drawn a cat and a heart at the bottom of the page? Maybe to suggest that cats like not only fish but seafood in general? Who knows?

Cancer guestbook page scanned by Mal

In contrast to Matt’s post, Amélie from Belgium is serious: “Cancer people are very sensitive and emotional. Always ready to help others. Cancers are the best of course!”. Amélie is right as one Cancer widely regarded as the symbol of peace and sympathy to others is Dalai Lama – Tibetan Buddhist religious leader.

Cancer guestbook page scanned by Mal

The last comment about Cancers came from Damien. He wrote:
“Cancer means –

Cancer guestbook page scanned by Mal

An excellent summary from Damien!
Cancers proved to be loyal, funny and very caring Cancers. We know fist hand how it is to live with one as our father is Cancer. Bit unpredictable but good hearted folks.

Please come back tomorrow, especially if you are a Capricorn!
Good night,

Notte Bianca Retrospective # 2: Aries

Our exhibition entitled “The Astral Room” organized for Notte Bianca was opened from October 1st to October 14th 2011 in Valetta, Malta. During the two weeks, the exhibition has been seen by many people from all over the world. Mal prepared 12 guestbooks, one for every Zodiac sign. The visitors recorded in them their comments, views, personal stories and opinions about themselves and the surrounding world.

Aries logo prepared for Notte Bianca, made by Rita and scanned by Mal

We had so much fun yesterday analyzing the guestbook for Aquarius. Today, we will take a look at the Ram, or Aries as it is better known. People born under this sign are said to be reliable, strong, open minded but also stubborn and ready to fight. Let’s take a closer look at what the true Aries are like!

Aries description written by Rita and scanned by Mal

The first comment left by an anonymous visitor is very short. It says “Fiercely loyal, caring and genuine”. A similar description was used in the 1940 to describe the jazz legend Billie Holiday while she performed on stage in New York.  Several others divas were also born as Aries: Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Diana Ross, Chaka Khan and the pop sensation Lady Gaga.

Aries guestbook page scanned by Mal

The second page of the guest book was shared by two different authors. The first one, also anonymous, wrote: “Hello! I’m Aries and proud : D ”. The second comment came from a man named Rudolf. With typical Arian sarcastic sense of humor, Rudolf stated: “Hello! I’m Aries and realist, so I don’t believe in the stars and in any gods”. Too bad Rudolf! Joseph Ratzinger aka Pope Benedict XVI is also an Aries and a very religious man!

Aries guestbook page scanned by Mal

Third page and two separate authors again – this time both of them are anonymous, but one signed his or her comment with a unique check signature. The first comment reads: “Strong headed, generous, passionate and impulsive!”. The other adds to the list: “Caring, good-natured, impulsive, worry sometimes, strong-willed and fierce at times!”.  The great statesman and United States president, Thomas Jefferson, the principal writer of The Declaration of Independence, was known to be strong-willed, fierce yet caring and generous at the same time. A true Aries!

Aries guestbook page scanned by Mal

The next entry, left by a person named Eli (we cannot determinate if it’s her or him) is the longest comment we have ever received. Eli starts with quoting a well chosen song “Tougher than the rest” by Bruce Springsteen and then gives us a long list of the best traits in Aries: “Strong, determined, independent, free spirited, proud, (a bit), self centered, crazy (yes…in a good way :P), interesting, adventurous, witty & foxy. Anyway, the list can go on forever. But I will say one thing. Although we Aries-es may act tough, independent (which we are), we really like people who need us after all”. Eli then ends with: “We are hard-core people with soft hearts!”. We don’t know if Eli is aware that one of Bruce Springsteen’s closest friends and collaborators, Max Weinberg, the drummer for The E-street Band, was born on April 13th. That makes him an Aries too!

Aries guestbook page scanned by Mal

Pauline Spiteri from Malta came up with much shorter list than Eli. She wrote: “Strong, happy, smiley, sexy, loving person, sometimes very quiet. I am a gift from God”. Two other Aries also known under the nickname of “the gift of God” were the famous French philosopher Rene Descartes and Italian genius Leonardo Da Vinci.

Aries guestbook page scanned by Mal

Charles and Ken, our next visitors, shared the page and two personal tales. Ken posted a response to Pauline’s entry with: “A gift from God huh? Not really sure about that, but still I’m flattered! About the Ram sign: passionate, determined, stubborn (and) not much of an altruist. Not very lucky sign yet intriguing and it’s interesting to belong to this fire sign”.  Charles wrote: “I’m quite determined, always looking for challenging adventures. Very supportive of other people’s needs. Yes, I’m Aries”.

Aries guestbook page scanned by Mal

Like Kevin and Charles, Léonie (born on 30th of March 1979) shared rather personal outlook on being Aries: “Stubborn, determined, selfish to an extent, generous when I see something that moves me (for example) pain loneliness, sadness, poverty. I become emotional then and help others to extend that I suffer. I also do a lot of animals in need as I love them so much. I love art, beauty, Antiquity and antique, rich lifestyles (for example of nobility). I love deep colors but also pastels. I can be everything and feel differently in short matter of time. I am easily angered and find it hard not to show it. I go red and my eyes turn fierce. I love gemstones, especially rubies”. Léonie would be delighted to know that the “official” colors for Aries are deep red, carmine and purple, and the gemstones: ruby and coral! The Aristocrat Aries include King Henry IV, Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck and is Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart – the 19th Duchess of Alba.

Aries guestbook page scanned by Mal

The last page has been shared by three different authors. The first, anonymous comment reads: “Strong, passionate yet unsure. Intelligent with a desire to explore, to learn more about herself + others – both people and background/cultures. Always to try new things, only the forbidden fruit lies outside of her grasp”. Another author added: “Self-centered and stubborn, can be generous, bit unpredictable, still a gift from Gods!” And the last person perfectly sums it up with: “Strong person. Never giving up”. True, no need to give up if you share your zodiac sign with Jackie Chan and Steven Segal!

Aries guestbook page scanned by Mal

All right! That’s all dear Aries. You are stubborn, yet passionate, self-centered yet generous, strong and looking for new, exciting adventures.

Our next victim will be Cancer, so stay tuned!

Notte Bianca Retrospective # 1: Aquarius

   Hello everybody!

Aquarius logo prepared for Notte Bianca, made by Rita and scanned by Mal

Can you believe that it’s been almost a month since the Notte Bianca and two weeks since our exhibition „ASTRAL ROOM” ended? Time is not moving fast, it is literally speeding like a car on the freeway! We are working hectically again, having more ideas than ever! But before we move to other exciting projects, we need to take a look at what is left after the white night madness. And there is plenty: pictures, memories, contacts, new friendships, connections, guest books…

A short note about Aquarius written by Rita and scanned by Mal

Yes, as you remember, we had 12 guest books at the exhibition. One for each sign. People have left us wonderful comments and opinions and we decided they are too good not to share. So starting with Aquarius, we will show you the scanned pages from the guestbook. Let’s see what you think about signs, aside from mythology and artworks!

The first comment about Aquarius from the guestbook was left by R.K fromPoland. It reads: “Open minded visionaries who see more than others. Sometimes too visionary for the real life”. Very true as Galileo, Charles Darwin and Thomas Edison were both born under this sign!

Aquarius guestbook page scanned by Mal

Another visitor named Maria has left a lengthy comment describing her personal journey saying: “It’s my first time I left my home for a long time and I think that (this) is a good experience for me because Malta is very nice and the place is beautiful! I like it. Thanks Malta! Thanks Notte Bianca!”. Maria hasn’t specified if she is Aquarius herself but they are said to be curious, adventurous and they enjoy travelling. Ernest Shackleton an Antarctic Explorer and Henry Morton Stanley, A Welsh adventurer are the best examples!

Aquarius guestbook page scanned by Mal

The third comment entitled “The Life of an Aquarian” was left anonymously. It gives a long list of character traits typical for Aquarius: “Creative, outgoing, interesting, intelligent, happy, adapts to all situations, romantic, likes culture, people, music, perfectionist, like to make nice clothes, loves life, honest, don’t like to imitate what others do. This is me!”. In short Aquarius is an artist, singer, actor, fashion designer. You need proof? Alice Cooper, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Bob Marley, Bridget Fonda, Christian Dior and many others could say the same. This is me!

Aquarius guestbook page scanned by Mal

Aquarius can also be psychological and philosophical: “Aquarius are the most interesting of all people, because they do not follow the old path but look for and create the new ways”. Alfred Adler, Austrian psychologist was the first one to define the psychology as we know today. His interest was not with the society but with the individual. Along with Sigmund Freud he became the co-founder of the psychoanalytic movement and was a core member of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society.

Aquarius guestbook page scanned by Mal

Certain Aquarian characteristics were repeated in another entry: “Perfectionist, Easy to Adapt, Outgoing, Honest, Open minded”- the virtues desired in diplomacy and politics. It’s nothing shocking that the most famous politicians were born under this sign: Boris Yeltsin, Ronald Regan, Dick Cheney or Franklin D Roosevelt among others.

Aquarius guestbook page scanned by Mal

Despite the majority of entries being written in English, we have also received several in the native languages of the visitors. Two separate people have left their comments on the same page placed below. The first one reads: “Freedom lovers, artists or love arts”. The second is written in Italian and was left by Frank Camilleri.

Aquarius guestbook page scanned by Mal

It seems, it is not that easy to sum up Aquarius with one single word. Another person has left again a long list of the Aquarian traits: “Creative, needy, intelligent, fun, witty, friendly, artistic, interesting, sarcastic, funny, easily influenced, excited, lazy yet energetic?”.  Aquarians love to laugh and they will do it even if they have to make fun out of themselves. Benny Hill, one of the most famous English comedians was – no surprise here – an Aquarius.

Aquarius guestbook page scanned by Mal

The following entry is Rita’s favorite. The signature is hard to decipher, but the author put a lot of effort into drawing this funny caricature around his comment. He wrote: “Painting, designer. Trying to understand every thing people believes (in) and religions. Creative, (it’s) not easy to understand me”.

Aquarius guestbook page scanned by Mal

Another two comments portray Aquarius in a bit different light. The first mentions: “Creative, fighter, intelligent, always in search of something hidden, changeable person, never the same”. The other author added: “Dreamers, disillusioned, naïve, deep thinkers and Manchester United fans”. Indeed, Cristiano Ronaldo a former Manchester United player was born on February the 5th and that makes him an Aquarius as well!

Aquarius guestbook page scanned by Mal

Wow, this was quite a ride, we must admit! We have learnt so much about you Aquarians!

Thanks to all who contributed to our little “research” – thank you for your thoughts, comments and sharing with us who you truly are.
That’s all for today. Next sign is the mighty Aries!

Till then,

Almost there

Dear All,

Notte Bianca Booklet photographed by Mal

We are almost ready for the grand opening. In three hours we will be at the German Maltese Circle hopefully greeting our guests. We had made some arrangements this morning and everything is set!

We want to share the last bit of our projects, which is tales about stars, legends and myths that are collected by Martin Galea de Giovanni. In the meantime we will be also sharing some photos taken by me and lovely Raisa Tarasova, who helped us with the set up. Some of the photos will be from this morning and were quickly edited for the purpose of this entry.

The end of October is known as the spooky season so instead of the usual trick or treat, fix yourself a cup of hot witches brew, put on something warm and take a trip on the dark side… of the sky!

First stop will be somewhere high overhead by mid evening. Commonly known as the constellation ‘Delphinus’, this little constellation was at one time called ‘Job’s Coffin’ due to the coffin shape of this small group of stars. The second constellation to hunt down is just south of Pegasus is called the Sea Monster Cetus. The third easy monster is the constellation Draco – The Dragon.

A little hunting thru some old atlas’ will be required to locate the following lost constellations, but to the intrepid hunter of the obscure, these will bring you some satisfaction once you have learned them and found them….after all this is a Hunt!

The False Cross, The Sickle and Cerberus, the three headed porter of hell are all but old constellations which no longer exist… but though the porter has retired, the demon in hell is alive and kicking …

Backgrounds on which the stories are printed and mounted

Turn your attention to the constellation Perseus and hunt down “The Demon Star” commonly known as Algol. This star is one of the shortest term variable stars, and can be seen to brighten and dim in the course of just a few days….!

A telescope will help you spot some other spooky fellows: Ophiuchus the surgeon on the ship Argos who became so good that he could restore the dead to life (until Zeus decided to throw a lightning bolt at him!), he now hides a “little ghost” planetary nebula NGC 6369 which together with the Witch Head Nebula- (IC 2118) at the foot of Orion, the ghost ring (IC 514) and the medusa nebula in Gemini … scare the daylights out of the sky.

II. Its turtles all the way!

A well-known scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: “What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.”

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying,

“What is the tortoise standing on?”

“You’re very clever, young man, very clever,” said the old lady. “But its turtles all the way down!”

Although we all know that the Earth sits on no turtle (or turtles), we also know that our knowledge doesn’t go much further than that….

For Stephen Hawking (who is considered as a living genius by many), the turtle story is one of two accounts of the nature of the universe; he asserts that the turtle theory is patently ridiculous, but admits that his own theories may be just as ridiculous. “Only time will tell,” he concludes.

For Geertz (a distinguished anthropologist), however, the story is patently wise, teaching us that we will never get to the bottom of things.

This comparison also reveals a difference between the positivist and interpretive or hermeneutic approach to the interpretation of myths. Positivists read myths literally and find them false and foolish; interpretivists read them metaphorically or allegorically and find them true and profound.

The phrase “turtles all the way down” or sometimes simply “a turtle problem” are often used to describe other infinite regressions.

III. Tragedies of sorts…

Some time ago I set at a theatre watching the story of Medea and Jason, unfolding into the tragedy that one was to expect….

It somehow reminded me of William Morris who in the 1800’s wrote the “Life and death of Jason”. It contains an exquisite description of centaur, whose own tragedy landed him a place in the heavens (well, the southern sky).

Notte Bianca website screenshot featuring our project

….at last in sight the Centaur drew,

A mighty grey horse trotting down the glade,

Over whose back the long grey locks were laid,

That from his reverend head aboard did flow ;

For to the waste was man, but all below

A mighty horse, once roan, but now well-nigh white

With lapse of years; with oak-wreaths was he dight

Where man joined unto horse , and on his head

He wore a gold crown, set with rubies red,

And in his hand he bare a mighty bow,

No man could bend of those that battle now.

… such was the detail given to one of the many constellations that (used to?) adorn the night skies.

Set against a pitch-black backdrop the constellations used to stage their daily drama – to millions world wide … No commercials, and absolutely environmental friendly…. No connection charges or fees.

In fact they still do perform their eons old drama, but now they have competitors …power hungry devices … computers, TVs, DVDs … draining energy while leaving little or none to our imagination.

The end product being couch potatoes, smog and light pollution … thus pulling the curtains on the cosmic drama that has entertained our civilization from the dawn of times …

Showing tonight in a dark sky far away from home! … Now, isn’t this the real tragedy?

IV. November Nights…

I was born on a grey and wet November night. That was way too many moons ago and had it been a cloudless night, the waxing crescent moon would have been visible in the sky right after sunset. Mercury was shining bright very close to Antares, in Scorpio. Jupiter and Mars rose a couple of hours later, and Saturn and Regulus must have made a fine pair of bright stars as they appeared on the horizon just as I was opening my eyes for the first time.

I wonder what astrologers would have conjured had they been able to look up at the night sky.

More setting up, mobile picture by Mal

Before it even crosses your mind that I’m becoming an astrology convert here’s the disclaimer: “No I don’t believe that the planets dancing around in the night sky make one iota of a difference to us earthlings, no matter how massive the planets and other celestial bodies are”. No, not even the size of the earthling does.

That said, for the past few years I’ve been more open to the idea that people born in different seasons might have some similar characteristics. The basis of this hypothesis is the fact that the brain is far more impressionable (neuroscientists refer to the term plastic) in early life than in maturity. This plasticity has both positive and negative sides of course. Unlike those born in June, being born in November means that you spend the first few months on Earth cuddled up in blanket upon blanket, experiencing short and dark winter days… and Christmas too.

On further investigations, it appears that some scientific studies do seem to point in this direction.

In fact, according to the study “Lifespan Depends on Month of Birth” conducted by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Germany if you were born during October through December, you may live longer than those born in April through June. And according to another study published in a 2007 issue of the ‘British Medical Journal.’, autumn-born babies may be more active than spring-born babies. The researchers found that fall babies activity surpassed spring-born ones by 9 percent.

It would obviously be interesting to see other similar studies being done in the future. Perhaps, in some ways, astrologers were unknowingly right, for the wrong reasons of course.

V.  Xibalba

Xibalba is not the kind of place you would regularly frequent, as once you get there, there will be no turning back. Once inside the entrance, rumoured to be found in a chain of Guatemalan caves, one will start a 1,500 light year journey to M42 – the Orion Nebula. This is a place considered by the Mayans to be a “Place of Fear”; the underworld of Xibalba.

Apart from the familiar belt of Orion, the Mayans used to consider another asterism in this constellation.  “The Three Stones of the Hearth” was formed by the great blue giant, Rigel, Kappa Orionis, the star Saiph and the belt star, Alnitak. This triangular pattern formed the hearth that was the very foundation of the Mayan home. Directly in the centre of the Three Stones of the Hearth, you will find the Orion Nebula.

Here it is interesting to point out that the Mayans had observed this nebulous object in the sky way before Peiresc rediscover it in the 17th century.

The significance of this celestial hearth is also related to the fact that it also represents a place of creation set in the heavens by the Maya maize god, Hun-Nal-Yeh.

It is quite fascinating to note that a few thousand years later, we have discovered that the centre of this heavenly hearth, the Orion Nebula (which actually extends by around 10° – that’s equivalent to the apparent size of 20 moons) is a stellar nursery where new stars are being born.

It appears that the Mayans had a good understanding of the endless cycle of energy and matter, where we simply borrow matter and energy for a short time, until it gets recycled into something else.

It’s almost amusing to see how many seem to resist natural concepts such as the profoundness of death all the way to the mundane daily recycling, when Earth is one perfect example of a stand alone life support system with ecological systems that recycle every bit of matter and energy. A planet that one day might end up in a mega-cosmic bring-in-site similar to the Orion Nebula, that will eventually give rise to stars and planets stranger than our most fertile imagination can conjure, yet made of the same chemicals which  we, and our surroundings, are currently made of.

VI. Under the August Moon…

According to the Mayans, a young orphan who lived with a poor old lady was feeling very lonely as the other men of the village did not let him go hunting with them. He envied them and decided to take matters into his own hands.

Armed with a crooked bow whose arrows hit him instead of propel forward, this little adventure was doomed to fail… and in fact, after a whole day of catching nothing, he was lost in the forest.

Out of this desperation, he began to play the bow like a musical instrument and sang about his troubles. Entranced by his singing, a beautiful deer approached him and stared at him in wonder. When he finally caught up with the deer, it turned into a beautiful girl with a beautiful dress of shimmering blue. He instantly fell in love, and she with him.

She proposed to marry him, and to take him home to live with her family. He readily agreed. The girl, it turned out, was a Goddess, and her mother was Grandmother of all

Growth and her father was the God of the Mountain. Her parents were not impressed with their daughter’s choice of a lonely mortal boy.

They both ran away and got married. She gave birth to two twins who turned out to be two plants of corn, one ivory-coloured and one amber-coloured. She was too exhausted to continue the journey, but sent her husband and the two children on to the village, making him promise to come back for her and not to forget her.

Working hard! Photo by Raisa Tarasova

No wonder the Gods wept at their daughter’s choice of husband, despite her protestations that this one is different.  She ended up dying for her love of the human.

After the hunter realized he has lost his beloved, he began to seek a way to bring her back again. A ray of hope was offered, but to do this, he had to go through a Herculean task…

That’s all for today. We are running out to prepare ourselves and we will see you at St Christopher`s Street in few hours.

The sky in two perspectives

The sky in two perspectives

The sky has always fascinated the mankind. Since the ancient times, the philosophers, astrologists, scientists, kings and common men have looked above and gazed at the stars in amazement. The most enthralling quality of the sky is that everyone can look at it and see it differently. Sky is never the same. Seen through different eyes, from different angles and perspectives, it mirrors the emotions and feelings of the individual.

Martin Galea de Giovanni and Malicia Dabrowicz prepared a project that shows the sky from two unique sides: the natural and the industrial one. A skilled photographer and ecological activist, Martin has been taking pictures of the night sky for many years and achieved a perfection of showing details and astral landscapes that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Malicia sees the universe all around her: in dirty industrial alleyways, painted on walls, engraved in metal or composed from corrosion and rust. To notice all the small pieces of sky in everyday life, she does not need a telescopic camera, only a bit of imagination and interest to look around. The two different views seem to contradict themselves at first, but if you look closer, you’d notice they are complementing each other completely.

The nature and the man coexist together in one perfect creation known as the universe.

And the sky is nothing, but another proof of that.

In the previous entries, we have presented Martin’s photographs, Rita and Matt’s Zodiak series, now it’s time to introduce you to the industrial magic captured by Malicia Dabrowicz. As Mal always says “let the pictures do the talking”, it’s a rare occasion to hear her commenting her own work. Using this as an opportunity, I decided to hijack this thread and give my own interpretation of the photographs prepared especially for Notte Bianca Exhibition.

This small graffiti was photographed by Malicia on 22nd of September and is probably her latest work. Dark and a little bit fuzzy, there is something powerful about it. A bird in flight caught in the form of a star – an unknown symbol. We can only guess whom does it belongs to. A friend or foe? Will you take a pick?

The word “star” has many meanings nowadays: an astral body, a champion in sport, a winner, celebrity, an actor, entertainer… It doesn’t matter where you go, there is always a star walk of some sort, filled with marks left by the famous, not so famous and the complete unknowns. When the fame fades away, your star at the supermarket might be the last thing people will notice under their feet…

A boarder, a barricade, a wall – all the inventions used to segregate and divide. This graffiti spotted in 2007 is a sign we sadly see too often. But the stars do not know the definition of a barrier; they can freely roam the sky and nobody will stop them to ask for a passport or an ID. I hope one day people will be like stars, just free.

One of my favorite works at the exhibition. An abstract star painted on vividly green wall.  The destruction of a star is the beginning of another form of life in the space. This is the endless circle of life and death, creation and destruction.

Socialist serenade seems to be the most popular picture taken by Malicia. It has been used on 3 previous exhibitions and is a crowd‘s favorite. The title comes from the song of British band Manic Street Preachers. A star, the color red and a shape that looks like a country on a map – it’s as they say: it’s good because it’s political!

A very, very rare picture! It’s more romantic than political or socially conscious as other pictures. Yet again inspired by music, this time by an album called “Digimortal” by Fear Factory. Eerie quiet and nearly minimalistic. Simple composition, big effect!

This is ne of the abstract pictures taken by Malicia in 2006 or 2007. A child’s painting on an old garage door. To me, it looks like a star chase, very dynamic and strange mixture of shapes and colors. Truly wonderful the mind of a child is! Well said, master Yoda!

Night time, small village near the ocean, sunset and the travelling plane far above our heads – this picture was taken during a walk with me and Matt Griffiths. It was a magical moment, I’m glad that Malicia managed to capture it. I’m also grateful that I was there to witness the beauty. Nothing can do justice to Nature, the greatest artist of all!
