AcidSitter – “PSYCHOPOMP” single review

At Indieterria, we absolutely adore the rock quartet, AcidSitter. This Japanese – Polish ensemble, stationed in the beautiful city of Krakow, produces some of the best mind blowing, art and prog infused psychedelic tunes you can find on the independent music market today. The band just came back with their newest single titled “PSYCHOPOMP” and boy, does it take the listeners for a truly free spiritual ride. Close your eyes and they will whisk you, far far away, to the sonic galaxy, where wild west aesthetic, psychedelic rock and roll and avantgarde pop meets and mixes.

WHO or the official bio: AcidSitter – a musical association of experienced Polish/Japanese psychonauts exploring a wide range of psychedelia with rock’n’roll passion and punk energy. The band consists of guitarist and lead vocalist, Tetsuya Nara (Tumbling Walls), guitarist, synth and keyboard player Rafał Klimczak (Neal Cassady, NEAL), drummer and handsonic player Tomek Głuc (Neal Cassady, Nucleon) and bassist/loutar/synth player Filip Franczak (Fraktale, Tumbling Walls, Kaseciarz).

WHERE: Acid Sitter are based in Krakow, Poland, but you can listen to them anywhere. Their music is available on all streaming services and on many Polish and international airways. Quite recently, they played a radio session for the Polskie Radio Program 3 (Polish Radio 3), one of the most prestigious Polish radio stations, an equivalent of the BBC Radio 6 in the UK. They were invited to play by Piotr Metz, a legend of music journalism, our own Polish Steve Lamacq. You can see videos from their performance here and here.

WHEN: “PSYCHOPOMP” was released on the 17th of April, and an official video debuted a month later, in May 2025. It is apparently the first single from the band’s upcoming second album, after 2024’s most excellent “Make Acid Great Again”. We do not know yet when it will be released, or what title it will have. Internet rumours place a bet on an early 2026 release. Our guess is as good as anybody else’s but Springtime next year does sound plausible indeed.

WHAT: “PSYCHOPOMP” is being described as a “energetic firecracker stone rock meets Beastie Boys, bathing in the psychedelic riffs of doom metal”. The track was recorded fully on tape and produced by Maciek Cieślak, leader of Ścianka, a cult rock band from Sopot. Mr Cieślak is a proud owner of an independent record label, My Shit In Your Coffee and is also a popular producer working with Lenny Valentino, Kings of Caramel and many others. He collaborated with AcidSitter before on their previous single, “Doomscroller’s Blues” – please read our review here.

Rafal Klimczak says: “’PSYCHOPOMP‘ fits thematically into the concept of the whole upcoming album, which is about the death of the ego. Psychopomp is a character from mythology – a guide of souls, leading us to the other side. In Jungian terms, he symbolizes the merging of the unconscious with the conscious. I believe that humanity today needs a psychopomp – to silence its own ego and stop the impending doom.”

The single cover was designed by Croatian artist, Lord Čardak (Čardak Studios).

WHY: Without beating about the psychedelic bush (or peyote cacti if you prefer), this is a hell of an amazing track. Standing at 5 minutes and 10 seconds, the song is indeed (as advertised) a brilliant Heinz variety musical mongrel. Strange loops and reverb guitars? Check. Unconventional, slightly broken and uneven tempo? Of course. Strange song structure? You bet. Experimental sound effects? Be my quest. Doom riffs and slow, heavy bass? As ordered, at 3 minute marks. Out of this world distorted vocals? Yep. The way Rafał sings is truly extravagant too: it’s somewhere between rap rock, alternative hip hop and traditional prog/art rock. Spellbinding, truly!

                                Tomek Głuc in PSYCHOPOMP

The video is some sort of a western/road movie without a car. It should be classified as a walking movie as the band just keeps wandering around and the trip is truly mesmerizing. First we meet a hippie cowboy wearing two hats: high-crowned, wide-brimmed Stetson and a colorful Mexican sombrero on top of it. He is dressed for the 90’s themed acid rave party: pink fluffy crop top jacket, blue sweater, sepia trousers, and a strange chest belt. Next, we see another, equally weird dude – a cross between a medieval Polish foot soldier and space cadet donning leather west, breast plate, fancy gloves, MC Hammer pants and helmet liner. Initially they stare at each other, like cowboys, ready for a duel, only the duel doesn’t involve guns but handshakes. A third man suddenly arrives and he is my absolute favourite. He reminds me of Silesian miner x Mario from Super Mario Bros: blue overalls, orange shirt (instead of red one) and a red baseball cap. His fashion accessories include industrial protective goggles, blue backpack and a pickaxe, for some strange unknown reasons (I don’t want to know). Maybe it is a nod to the 5 millions of Silesians that live in the Silesian Metropolitan Area bordering the Lesser Poland where Krakow is located. Who knows!

                                      Tetsuya Nara in PSYCHOPOMP

The three heroes greet each other and start walking: up the hill, past a river bank, through some arid terrain until they reach a green lush forest. They are welcomed by a mysterious figure played by Tetsuya Nara. Looking like a Studio Ghibli character, Nara is dressed in dark blue parka, matching trousers and a pair of green Wellington boots. With a yokai mask and an umbrella in hand, he guides the travellers through waterfalls, forest paths and marshes. They stop to rest, eat a banana, smoke a cigarette, and watch the sun go down. And they find a dog. They light a bonfire, and keep on walking, alongside the dog until the screen fades out. The end.

We have a feeling this is some sort of a psychedelic version of Czterej Pancerni i Pies (Four Tank Men and a Dog), sens the tank of course. It is worth mentioning that the video was directed and edited by Tomek Łowiecki (aka FAN∃RON).

SUMMARY: “PSYCHOPOMP” is probably the best track AcidSitter released to date. 10 golden psychedelic stars out of 5! Seriously? Our track of the month! Highly recommended.
