TASH – Killing for Violence single review

I wish my day had more than just 24 hours, I would have been able to pen a few more reviews without sacrificing rest, sleeping and eating. Sadly, it is often a choosing game, which amazing artist should Indieterria cover next. With so many submissions we receive (majority of them really good), we have to prioritize – women, artists of colour, artists from minority or LGBTQ+ will always be our first picks but we try to cover political/socially aware or experimental acts too. I can only apologize to the absolutely brilliant London based artist TASH that it took us a month to review her latest single, but a sudden illness got in the way. Nonetheless, our 5 star review for “Killing For Violence” is here and you better play that song loudly, cause it really SLAYS.

Official bio: Do you by any chance like to rock out? Bass wielding pop-metal front woman Tara Noble delivers her own brand of empowerment under the mononym TASH. Her prom queen warrior aesthetic collides with singable guitar riffs and dreamy vocals to create an onstage presence that is both alluring and feverish. Following an incredible set headlining The New Artist stage at All Points East and radio support from Kerrang! and BBC Radio 1 ‘Future Flavour’ on their latest single ‘Dead’. She has a live sound, and performance undoubtedly fit for larger stages, and is not one to miss as she takes over the pop-metal universe.

TASH debuted in 2020 as a three piece band, then until 2022, they played as a duo and now, the only remaining person is the lead single Tara Noble. I was quite fond of them when they released “Hurricane Man” with Robbie Paice on 28th of January 2022, but I much prefer the latest incarnation. I hear it so often at different PR and A&R talks/conferences that it is hard(er) for a woman to make a next step in her musical career on her own after she started off in a band. Such stereotypes are incredibly damaging and discouraging for women. There are numerous examples that this is simply not true. When a woman goes solo, she seems to be doing much better than when she was just a pretty face in a band full of men. Tara Noble has been performing on stage since she was 13 years old and after a decade, she knows exactly how to present herself and how to rely on her skills as a front woman. She doesn’t need to be in a band, SHE is the band. Girls, if you are reading my words, please do not let yourself be told that you need someone else to make a career – in every genre, especially in metal and hard rock, women are perfectly fine on their own. Having a good team around you doesn’t mean that you need to be in a band. Go solo and give it a go. You may love it.

Going back to TASH, she is phenomenal as a solo artist. Her music has been featured multiple times on BBC Introducing, BBC Radio 1, Kerrang and on many other national radio stations. Watch her videos, she is feral when playing live. And the newest single “Killing For Violence” is a prime example of what a good songwriter she has become. 3 minutes and 11 seconds of crazy riffs, melodic vocals and 90’s inspired alt/adult contemporary rock and roll with grunge intervals thrown into the mix.

The song is definitely American flavoured. It reminds me of Veruca Salt, lighter Hole or heavier Tracy Bonham. It has a wonderful, half Californian/half Bostonian vibe, tempo changes (slower moments kicking in at the 1 minute mark), pretty guitar/vocal distortions and a lot of energy. I swear, in its clean version, TASH could debut on Billboard charts! I mean, we periodically review absolutely stunning singles but this one has been following me for two days now and I keep singing it to myself while shopping. People keep giving me surprised stares but I don’t care.

Despite its gloom title, “Killing For Violence” is strangely uplifting and it is genuinely making me happy. After two trips to A&E in the last two weeks with a pulse intended on finishing me off, I really relax listening to the single and have a huge smile on my face. Nothing puts me in a better mood than seeing another lady kicking major ass. And boy, this world needs a kick and this industry needs more women on the radio airwaves and on festival placements. TASH is ready to take on big stages, she just needs more opportunities. We have plenty of uber talented, multiinstrumentalist ladies in loud music that could rock the festival audiences like Hurricane Rita rocked Florida in 2005, so bookers please stop inventing excuses for inviting only male/heritage acts. Start doing your job and start booking females!

If you haven’t heard TASH yet, you are seriously missing out. She will be playing shows this autumn around London and it’s obligatory for you to be there if you are in the neighbourhood. For those who can’t travel to the capital, play her music, stream her songs, share her social media, and make much noise.

The louder we demand ladies like TASH being included on larger tours, bigger festivals, the better.

Representation matters and so does the talent. TASH has buckets of talent and she needs our help to bloom into the international star she easily could be a few years from now.
