Alternative Christmas with JW Paris

Christmas may be now over but the Holiday season on Indieterria continues. We sat down with our last guest for the Alternative Christmas this year – the London based  JW Paris. Gemma Clarke, Daniel Collins and Aaron Forde were kind to share some of their biggest musical influences, remembered their Leave The Capitol tour that took them up and down the country and celebrated the release of their debut EP. Next year will be very busy for the trio so please keep your eyes open wide for new gigs and new music announcements!

JW PARIS by C24 Photography (Christmas edition)

It’s a tradition on Indieterria to have an alternative Christmas interview with our favourite bands. JW Paris became one of our favourite indie groups this year. Please tell us your personal favourites. What artist/band had the biggest impact on you this year?

JW Paris:  A very happy Christmas and New Year from all of us at Blaggers Records and JW Paris!

The biggest impact would be Wunderhourse with his incredible album “Cub”. We are massive fans of Jeff Buckley and this album pulls on some of Grace’s melodic and storytelling attributes. We have always been inspired by Jacob Slater, ever since the Dead Pretties!

2022 was a difficult year – the music business is still coming out of the pandemic, pubs and venues are struggling. Here’s a chance to give a very public shout out to your favourite grass root places. And to your favourite booker/promoter. Let’s make sure people know where to go in 2023.

JW Paris: Here’s our list

St Albans – The Horn – promoted by Juicebox
Luton – The Castle – promoted by our good friends Vandalism Begins @ Home
London – anywhere that Goto Beat promote
Also, in London – Rooz Studios where we’ve had and seen some cool release promo and our very own X-mas party gigs!

Every part of the UK has its own special Christmas customs. What is the weirdest Christmas belief you ever encountered?

JW Paris: A rather rotund gentleman getting all the credit for the presents of hard-working families.

You are based in London and London has just been voted the Christmas capital of the UK. What do you like about the city around Christmas and what is that you are not very fond of at all?

JW Paris: London pubs in general, they really are the home away from home. Like most of the year, some of those pub goers can really let the side down. However, we like to see the good in people. Also, we are not massively fond of how our government deal with the homeless situation.  At this time of year, is so hard for so many. If you can help out, please do!

We absolutely love Blueberry soup. What’s your favourite Christmas dish? And that’s the recipe? We would love to introduce something new to our wigilia (Polish Christmas dinner we have on the 24th of December)!

JW Paris: Our Aaron has some Austrian roots. We usually celebrate Christmas Eve as well with a homemade schnitzel which if we knew the recipe…we’d be millionaires. Was always made by our nans. Shout out to NANZ!!

We always wanted to ask this, as professional musicians, what is the worst thing that irritates you at Christmas? The same old Christmas songs on the radio? Bad covers or groups of amateurs carolling out of tunes in the pubs?

JW Paris: To be fair, we don’t mind some of the same old Christmas songs. It seems the only way to pay the bills in music is to write a Christmas banger, right? In all seriousness, we think the worst thing is the consistent pressure from brands alike to push everyone out to spend money on presents. Spent time with each other rather than break the bank.

If you could create a perfect holiday playlist which songs would be on it? Let’s settle for the 5 of your most beloved tunes.

JW Paris: We actually put together an Alternative Christmas playlist which you can find HERE. If you’re sick of Slade, give this one a listen.

Please let us know, what was the best thing that happened to you as a band this year?

JW Paris: For us, it was our huge tour in February 2022 where we played right up and down the country in the UK’s most iconic grass roots venues. We supported The Skinner Brothers and went on tour with everyone involved in the Leave The Capital project.  Also, we released our first long play list of songs, our first EP “Stuck In A Video” which saw our singles get national and international radio play. Hearing ourselves on Radio1, Radio 6 and Radio X including a live session with John Kennedy were all dreams come true.

And finally, what is your wish for 2023? World peace? Number one record or something else?

JW Paris: In 2023, we are set to release our follow up EP to “Stuck In A Video’ and it would be fantastic if we could grab some tasty slots on the UK festival scene. That and obviously world peace!
