Poet, model, songwriter, singer, music producer – French born songstress Mango In Euphoria is many things. She settled in London just before the pandemic and it didn’t take her long to be discovered. Encouraged by Luke Spiller from The Struts to write her own compositions and compared to Grimes, Mango is thrilling the indie scene with her dark disco/alternative electro pop. We very rarely review this type of music on Indieterria but we will always make an exception for something really good. The new offering from Mango is called “Ghost” and it is a big hit with us.

Hiding under the moniker of Mango In Euphoria is Manon, a truly fascinating creature that is hard to squeeze into a single box. She is so different from anything the British music scene has to offer that she could simply go for a walk to the local greengrocers and she would still turn every head. Bold, artistic, strikingly beautiful in a very Parisian way – Manon worked very hard to turn her ideas and poetry into original music. She may say in her bio that she doesn’t think of herself as a vocalist but in reality, she is pretty good at what she does.
“Ghost” is her second single (the first one titled “Goddess” was released in June this year) and it stands at 3 minutes and 27 seconds. The track was penned by Mango herself, Philippe Francq and Matyas Csonka (formerly of London based grunge outfit Black Calavera). It was produced by Paul Whalley (Mumford and Sons, Ellie Goulding, Little Mix) at Tileyard Studios and mixed by Dave Benkel. That’s quite an impressive list of people being involved.

It gets even better – the song is a cross of several genres including pop, EDM (electronic dance music), rock, indie and disco. It is labelled as dark disco which we absolutely love, but other reviewers have also called it dirty electro and even goth pop. Whatever the name for the genre, we think it could actually fit many people’s boats. “Ghost” is radio friendly, not too pop(y) to alienate indie music listeners and pretty mainstream to bring causal listeners into more sophisticated and more refined sound spheres. Imagine Lady Gaga teaming up with Evanescence or Paramore for a performance at Wave Gotik Treffen (one of the biggest gothic music festivals in the world in case you are asking) – if you put it all together you will get Mango In Euphoria. More or less anyway.
“Ghost” touches on a very important subject of a toxic relationship that many people find themselves trapped in for many years. It is especially hard for young women as the pressure inflicted on them by their peers, families and the society in general is much greater and they are more reluctant to leave despite the abuse they suffer. The unrealistic portrayal of love in pop culture and their upbringing is not helping either.

“When you’re naïve, you might end up hanging out with the wrong people. Doing so made a permanent stains on me and my personality” – Says Mango. “Ghost” reflects on how sick I became as a wounded girl who desperately craved a real love story, or a saviour, to the point I crossed my own boundaries. And you want to get back everything you had during the ‘love bombing’ phase when they would give you the world, while you’re being treated like you’re absolutely worthless. You want to get them back so bad, because where the hell are they now? Where are they?? But the sweet love was only haunting you, hurting you, and never came back. Because it never truly existed”.
What we truly like about “Ghost” is that it’s unique. Mango In Euphoria offers something new, follows her own path without looking at others or trying to sound or look like pop stars. Manon has a very clear vision of herself as a performer and it incorporates digital artwork, costumes, make up and neatly edited music videos. She may be at the beginning of her artistic career, but she knows exactly how she wants to present herself to her audience. With the indie scene saturated up to its eyeballs with lads bands that are carbon copies of each other, Mango In Euphoria comes across as a breath of fresh air.

Manon is teasing that 2023 will be a year filled with more music, more gigs and more performances. And you know what? We can’t hardly wait! When festival slots and gigs are dominated by white male bands to the ratio of 95% male to 5% female performers, highlighting female voices and their music is more urgent than ever. Please, support small, independent venues, go to local gigs where an unknown band or a solo artist is playing – without your support, it will be impossible for them to continue and to flourish. Write, share and listen to those incredible women that we have on the scene that normally do not receive the attention the male performers get. Yet the ladies are brilliant, talented and hugely original. Artists like Mango bring elegance, sensuality and excitement to the music not seen in decades. Heavy music, or pop – the ladies are leading a proper revolution here.
Come and join the ride, you will not be disappointed.
“Ghost” is out now on So Far So Good Records.
