Oh lala! The French-British duo, A VOID are absolutely irresistible and they are back with their new single “Fish in Your Pocket”. This festive anthem for the outcasts will light up your anti capitalistic Christmas trees and get all your bells jingling. We sat down with the leader of the band, Camille Alexander, to discuss the single, their upcoming third album, videography, art and politics. Camille is always a pleasure to talk to, so fasten your seatbelts, mes chéri(e)s, as nobody makes chaos so beautiful like the French.

Official bio: French-English London-based rock trio A VOID return with “Fish In Your Pocket”, a burst of high-energy alt-metal and emotional confrontation. The track marks the first single from their forthcoming third album “The Unavoidable”, produced by Mercury Prize–winning producer Shuta Shinoda at Hackney Road Studios. Equal parts chaos and catharsis, “Fish In Your Pocket” uses the surreal metaphor of “a fish in your pocket” to explore unspoken truths and inherited patterns in relationships. The track spirals between frantic riffs, sharp turns and a climactic gut punch: “You are the same as your father.” Despite its brief two-minute runtime, the song unfolds like a sonic circus: guitar and bass pirouetting around each other before collapsing into an urgent finale. Fish In Your Pocket follows A VOID’s biggest year yet, including a landmark performance supporting Indochine at the sold-out Accor Arena in Paris. Their third album, “The Unavoidable”, is due in Autumn 2026.
We can’t believe it but it’s been nearly 2 years since your last single “The Gutter”. What have you been up to guys?
Camille: We’ve been perfecting our upcoming album “The Unavoidable”. Actually, we’ve been taking our time with this one, because we want to get it right. We are still working with Shuta Shinoda who recorded “The Gutter”, it’s been really amazing collaborating with him and he’s been very patient with us being meticulous and thorough. It’s also great to have Steve Smith on the drums. He’s been helping us to get all the songs to sound the way they need to.
“The Gutter” was greatly received, it got you national airplays from BBC Introducing, BBC 6 and Radio X. It is also one of our favourite tracks. We remember you were greatly excited to release it. Looking back, at the track, how do you feel about it now?
Camille: It’s also one of our favorite tracks and we’ve been playing it live a lot recently. It hasn’t received many airplays though, so it doesn’t seem to be an industry’s favorite but it makes sense as it’s all about feeling like a failure as an artist. You are pouring your heart out and getting so little back, but you keep going no matter what happens. Even if nobody takes any notice of you cause you’ve got no other choice.
Your new single is entitled “Fish in Your Pocket”. You have to tell us what it is about. What’s the story behind it?
Camille: “Fish In Your Pocket” is about letting go and accepting the reality you’ve been trying to evade for a while. It’s also about subconsciously repeating inherited patterns in relationships and never breaking the cycle. We added the lyric: “You are the same as your father” repeated at the end of the song on purpose to invite the listeners to question their own realities.
“Stepping on Snails”, “Sick as a Dog”, “Fish in Your Pocket” – you really like unusual titles for your singles, and there is always an animal in them. Is it a conscious choice or a coincidence?
Camille: We also have an interlude called “Armadillo” and a new song called “Butterfly” haha! I guess it must be intentional.
A Void is always in motion. You constantly play shows all over the UK and in Europe. We have to ask about the biggest gig you recently played with Indochine. Big area, thousands of people watching you. How did it feel to be performing in front of such an enormous crowd?
Camille: It was pretty unreal! When we got asked to open for them, it was really intense building up to the gig, heart racing and everything you can imagine. Once we got in the flow of the show and started to make the stage our own, it was the most incredible experience ever to be honest. There’s nothing quite like 18000 people clapping and cheering at the end of each song. We are so grateful for getting such a crazy opportunity and for the amazing Indochine fans who made us feel super welcome.
Camille, beside fronting a band you are also a photographer and a videographer for other artists. You worked with the likes of The Empty Page, Ugly Ozo or Mango in Euphoria. Is it hard to direct other creatives from the opposite side of the camera? Do you find it fulfilling to see your videos gather thousands of views or even go viral?
Camille: I’m not sure any of my videos have gone properly viral yet, but it’s great to have other avenues, outside of the band, to explore different ways to express my creativity. I work mostly with people who do music that inspires me, and who also are great performers. For me, it’s a delight to film someone giving their all really. I like shouting at people or just saying random things and see where it goes. Mostly, I tell them to look at the light and to go crazy. It’s always great fun on shoots and it’s pretty laid back. I am lucky to get a lot of help from Neil Anderson aka Wildblanket Photography/98 Wounds. He is such a great person to have on shoots and always has useful insights as well.

On 25th of September this year, you held your first art exhibition at the Dash The Henge Store in Brixton. An exposition made of your original artworks, we want to add. Tell us how it went and do you plan any other exhibitions in the future?
Camille: It was really amazing. We also performed an acoustic set with loads of new songs to celebrate the opening of the exhibition. We had a lot of friends attending and people we hadn’t seen in a while that have been supporting us a lot. I hope I get to do another one of these, hopefully a bit bigger. I noticed whilst putting together my picks for what I would be exhibiting that I had hell of a lot of stuff. It would be great to do a crossover exhibition of artwork, photography, video and modelling work also some day!
“Fish in Your Pocket” was released on 19th December. Can we consider this song as an anti -festive Christmas single? It would be a classic A VOID manoeuvre – going against the trends and dropping a two minute grungy punk anthem at the peak of the consumerism season. Only you can pull that one off and get people excited.
Camille: I think this track is a great track to call out your relatives at Christmas actually! It’s a song for the misfits and the black sheep of the family who are sick of the bullshit. A cathartic refuge for the outcasts.
And probably a question everybody is now asking: if there is a new single, will the new record follow? Can you disclose any details about the upcoming album?
Camille: We’re gonna release singles throughout next year, until the album release in Autumn 2026. It’s called “The Unavoidable”. It’s got a bit of everything you love about us, and some more you didn’t even think you wanted.
Last question is always fun at Indieterria. So, Macron is looking for a new prime minister and he turns to A VOID to form a new French Government, in a desperate attempt to avoid early election for the fifth time. Feel free to name three things that you are implementing immediately and who is in your cabinet?
Camille: If Macron was looking for a prime minister, we’d tell him to shove a reusable bottle up his shiny little bum-hole. We would kick him out and put Philippe Poutou in his place, who could then find a suitable prime minister. Before we would leave the cabinet, we’d implemented a permanent irreversible tax on the ultra rich, put a universal income in place and changed the sentence to 40 years minimum for all rapists (+ chemical castration)!
