Indieterria meets Izzy T

Izzy T lives the life of a rock and roll nobility already. Pesky journalists from the other side of the globe are sending her questions in the middle of the night and the poor girl is answering them onboard the plane, on her way to a gig. At the same time, back home in the UK, her newest song received rave reviews from Alyx Holcombe at BBC Radio 1. Insert here all those overused slogans like no mercy or no rest for the wicked, but Izzy T wouldn’t have it any other way. And while you are reading this article, Izzy is rocking in the free world, alongside the sensational Delilah Bon. Tonight’s show in Pittsburgh is (almost) sold out and tomorrow her performance will be on the lips of everybody who saw her live. All in a day’s work, isn’t it?

The legendary American magazine, Rolling Stone called you “fiercely powerful”, BBC Radio 1 “absolutely spellbinding”, please introduce yourself to our readers who haven’t yet heard your music. Who is Izzy T?

Izzy T: (laughing), Hello, Izzy T is your bad ass big sister who’s going to fight for you when you need her!

You originally come from Hull, but you moved to America a year ago. How does the Iranian-British lass find life on the other side of the pond, especially in LA? It’s the legendary place where big careers can be made. Tell us what bands from the City of Angels should we be checking out?

Izzy T: LA HAS honestly opened up a LOT of doors for me. I’m really grateful to be here. Izzy two years ago, would be craving the life that I have now. Whenever times get hard, I remind myself of that. Artists you should be checking out (in LA) are ChromeraSwam LewisFamiliar FacesHoly WarsSophie Cooper, and wayyyy more!

Congratulations are in order – you just scored another play on the BBC Radio 1! Well done, if we are not mistaken this must be your 7th play on the Beeb! We need to ask, is there an American version of BBC Introducing? Or any other scheme for emerging/unsigned artists?

Izzy T: You’ll probably have a better idea than I do! Honestly, I just don’t know! I’d say the BBC Introducing is the thing I miss about the UK the most. I think musicians in the UK are taken care of more in the way that there’s the Musicians Union, there’s the BBC that supports and plays unsigned music, but America has a lot more venues! Of course, it being a bigger country and all.

You have the unique experience of having performed on both sides of the Atlantic. What are the pros and cons between being an independent artist in the UK and being one in the US?

Izzy T: There are definitely big pros and cons! I’d say that rock is embraced a lot more in America than in the UK. England has a great but pretty little rock scene, but yeah, in America the rock culture is huge. A lot of the artists I grew up listening to were American: Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Paramore, Green Day, Lenny Kravitz or Chris Cornell. In the UK, you actually get PAID for performing a lot more than in here! In America, it feels like you breathe and you have to pay 20 dollars just for that! A lot of venues in LA became pay to play. I’ve noticed, this is why, many touring bands are now starting to skip big cities like LA and perform in more rural parts of the country. I’m still new here and have tons to learn, but I’m super excited and grateful to even BE here doing what I love, with people I admire.

Your newest release, “Halo” comes with a fantastic cover. It reminds us of an orthodox iconography. Instead of a crown of thorns, you are seen wearing a crown of cigarettes and you even smoke one. Who took the picture?

Izzy T: My friend Kyla took it. I came up with the concept. I wanted something gritty, to replicate a halo in the grittiest of ways and cigarettes are pretty gritty! (laughing). I aimed to create something iconic, and Kyla really brought the vision to life in a beautiful way.

You will be supporting the mighty Delilah Bon on her first American tour! That’s the best news we heard this year coming from the US! What dates you play and where fans can see you live.

Izzy T: I’m excited to be touring with Delilah Bon! I will play three shows with her: at Crafthouse in Pittsburgh (August 7th), The Magic Bag in Ferndale, Detroit (August 8th) and the sold out show at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago (August 9th).

We absolutely love the fact that you are collaborating a lot with other women.Tell us about female artists you shared stages with this year.

Izzy T: I played with Sophie Lloyd in January, then I played NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) in Anaheim straight after that with an all female band of musicians called Gritty In Pink! It’s been great to be supported and elevated by women this year, the biggest opportunities I’ve had have all come from them!

2025 is definitely the year of Izzy T. What are your plans and goals for the next year?

Izzy T: Overall, I know that this is just the tip of the iceberg, who the hell knows what I’ll be doing next year!? I realize it’s just the beginning but people here are starting to see what I’m really about!
