AcidSitter – “Look at the Sun” single review

Polish-Japanese AcidSitter are on a proverbial roll. Since December, the quartet has been preparing fans for the arrival of their second album by steadily releasing new material. First, there was “Doomscroller’s Blues”, a sarcastic and pop-infused tale about the dangers of idle scrolling through social media and being influenced by the horrors and emptiness it has to offer. Last month, we reviewed “PSYCHOPOMP”, one of the best songs the band has put out to date (in our humble opinion of course) and before we could collect our jaws from the floor, here comes “Look at the Sun” that is apparently a sequel to a cult classic by The Doors! AcidSitter may be aiming high but they have everything they need to reach musical Olympus: skills, creativity and a lot of justified rock and roll swagger.

Official bio: Poland based psych-rockers AcidSitter premiere new single “Look At The Sun”. This is the third single from their upcoming album after “Doomscroller’s Blues” and “PSYCHOPOMP”. Look At The Sun” is a peculiar sequel to When The Music’s Over by The Doors, but instead of silence, it offers resurrection. The track moves between soulful melodies and vintage Motown grooves, channeling the theatrical flair of late 60’s and 70’s musicals like Hair or Jesus Christ Superstar. It’s soaked in psychedelic aesthetics and littered with flashbacks to the golden era of countercultural sound. A post-apocalyptic anthem that glows with memory, melody, and the lingering warmth of the sun.

We know the old saying – there is nothing new under the sun. This may be the truth as fashion and trends are being recycled every couple of years, however you will always find something unique and interesting created from old building blocks. This is what AcidSitter excel at: they make music that is decades old but with new twists and modern interpretation that is attractive to the 21st century listener.

Look at the Sun” is indeed a masterfully woven sonic tapestry that incorporates elements from West End musicals, funk, psychedelic disco, Motown R’n’B and art rock, all of it wrapped tightly in a psychedelic blanket of the highest quality. I’m sure, some musical purists and critics out there will probably consider any suggestion of a sequel to any of The Door’s tracks a blasphemy, but I do not have such concerns. AcidSitters are doing a splendid job here and Ray Manzarek wouldn’t take any offence.

And while “When The Music’s Over” is slow, serious, 10 minute ode to Hammond organs and environmental causes, “Look at The Sun” is light, sunny and carefree. If it was ever to be pressed on vinyl, it would probably smell of pina colada and raspberry bubblegum. The song has a summer vibe to it, an “airy” atmosphere and levity that characterizes surf rock. I’m actually very surprised this is not a spiritual sequel to The Beach Boys or Dick Dale. The lyrics offer hope and encourage having a moment to have fun, even if there is a lot of darkness around us. I absolutely adore the wah wah sound effects that appear in the back throughout the track. This in turn reminds me of Jimi Hendrix, or even the Brit pop era of the early 90’s (The Stone Roses especially from their second album, Cast, Charlatans).

Look at the Sun” stands at a very traditional, radio friendly 3 minutes and 42 seconds. It was produced and recorded fully on tape by Maciek Cieślak, and as previous singles, comes with an unique artwork by Lord Čardak (Čardak Studios).

Not sure what the band means by calling it “post-apocalyptic”, but maybe it could be featured on the soundtrack to the second season of Fall Out? Who knows? Anyway, this is a song for the summer hippie in you. You can thank us later.
