After two years of silence, IZZY T returns with her new single “Crime Scene” and it can only be described as a dark, cautionary protest song. Known for her fusion of rock, electronica, indie rock and alternative metal, IZZY merges musical boundaries of classical rock activism, feminism and social justice. “Crime Scene” shines a bright light on women’s safety, their place in the patriarchal society and pandemic of sexual abuse they suffer, using vivid and sometimes brutal imaginary. Hard times calls for hard measures and IZZY T is speaking her truth loud and clear. Listen as what she says needs to be said.
“Crime Scene” single cover
Official bio: IZZY T releases unapologetic New Single “Crime Scene” to address femicide, gender-based violence, and the systemic inequality faced by women and the LGBTQ+ community. With haunting, raw lyrics and a provocative sound, “Crime Scene” addresses the psychological and emotional toll of sexual violence and mental abuse on women. In western countries, where intimate partner violence and gender-based crimes are on the rise, and in regions like Iran, where women’s rights are under attack and LGBTQ+ individuals face persecution, “Crime Scene” paints a powerful narrative of suffering, survival, and defiance. As a feminist and humanitarian who is connected to her ancestry, Izzy has also been performing at various philanthropic protests for the equality and liberation of the Iranian people.
There is no beating about the bush and Izzy is not here to sugarcoat the grim reality. “Throughout my life, I’ve witnessed multiple friends of mine become victims of sexual assault, or gay friends being attacked in the street at night. Being an empath felt like a curse, because I felt their pain as my own” she writes in one of her posts on her social media. “I saw how much it mentally and physically affected their lives, making it never the same again. Some reported, some didn’t, but ALL of the allegations led to NO justice. It’s not all men, but with 1 woman being unalived every 10 minutes, we need to encourage men to have more open conversations, and seek better role models”.
Izzy has done a diligent research in preparation for the single release and the statistics she quotes are shocking: every 10 minutes in the world a woman is murdered, nearly 70% of the murders are committed by her family member, relative or ex partner. According to UN report, in 2023, around 51,100 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). On average, 140 women or girls were killed every day by someone in their own family. In the US, home is the most dangerous place for women – nearly 60% of all women murdered by men died in their own homes. UK statistics are nearly identical, standing at 56%. Almost 90% of victims reported their killers to authorities before the murder or accused them of some sort of violence, from economical to physical. Sexual assaults are also rampart: 1 woman out of 3 was a victim of a sexual assault in 2022, nearly 60% of all women between age of 16 and 70 will become a victim of sexual assault at some point in their lives. And while police note 31% increase in reports of sexual assault between 2019 and 2022, convictions for rape are the lowest in a decade, only 2% ended in successful prosecution as of 2023. Even raising awareness of the problem can lead to harassment, as Izzy found out personally. She uploaded several videos of herself, standing on the LA streets holding a placard with QR code to her song and you can see that security guards and male members of the public turned hostile as soon as they found out what the track was about.
“Crime Scene” stands at 3 minutes and 52 seconds. It is much different than the previous tracks we reviewed on Indieterria: “Catch Myself” (July 2023) and “I Feel Everything” (October 2022). Ballad-like, slow, with haunting vocals and acoustic guitars, “Crime Scene” will make a lasting impression on the listeners. “I have been at war for my life” sings Izzy and every woman will understand what she means. There is a war on women, on minorities, trans or LGBTQA+ folks happening in many places in the world now and we are all forced to fight to stay safe and alive.
IZZY by Jack Lue
The song speeds up in the middle – you can hear heavy riffs, vocals become more angry and wild, the drums kick in. There is defiance against the violence hurled at the victims: call us all you like, but if you mistreat us or hurt us, we remain a stain on your conscience. “Clean the crime scene” Izzy dares those who mistreat others – go on, wash the floors, hide the evidence, but the truth will come out in the end.
I mentioned earlier that “Crime Scene” uses vivid and brutal imagery. The video to the song, directed by artist and photographer Swam Lewis and shot at MiViDa performance and arts venue in Los Angeles, was turned into a real crime scene like we know from CSI or Law and Order tv shows. You will not see any blood, but that doesn’t mean that the setting is less haunting or traumatic. IZZY alongside a group of young women are laying on the ground in poses suggesting that they were violently killed. An older man dressed in a black suit walks among them, we don’t know who he is, maybe a mortuary owner or a professional crime scene cleaner making sure that all evidence is swept away. Between the bodies on the floor, IZZY takes a central stage. Wearing smeared makeup and a t-shirt saying “Woman, Life, Freedom”, she embodies the sacrifice women pay every day, everywhere. Many people seem to think that only gore or excessive brutality can shock the viewers, IZZY proves that this is not the case. I wish I could say that this silent display, with women laying motionless is a thing out of nightmares, but sadly this is very very real. And it scares the hell out of me.
“Crime Scene” came out on 28th of March and it was played by BBC Introducing, Total Rock radio, performed at LA’s Women’s March protest against fascism, and has been shared by various human/women’s rights activists/influencers online.
IZZY is fighting on behalf of us all. Please play the song and join the resistance. Your voice matters. In times like these, nobody can afford to remain neutral.
