Frankie Wesson – “This is Motion” single review

The old, wise saying goes – never change a winning team. Frankie Wesson, a South Wales based singer/songwriter seems to have taken this to heart. She has built a great team around her and this allows her to make some of the best music in her career. Her newest single “This Is Motion” is out now and it’s a brilliant, captivating and energetic piece made with friends and collaborators who truly understand her musical vision.

                                   “This Is Motion” single cover

In January, when we reviewed Frankie’s previous single “Paper Planes”, we noticed that her usual Americana (or Welshana as I like to call it)/folk/semi acoustic sound was changing. She confirmed that she wanted to create rockier, heavier music and “This Is Motion” is probably the first song that really brings this change out of the depth and into the spotlight. The track standing at 4 minutes and 27 seconds mixes pop, rock, punk-pop and American college rock into a very impressive sonic extravaganza.

I deliberately started this article with a famous quote from Sir Alf Ramsey who apparently uttered those words just before leading the English football team to victory in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Having a dedicated team around a person is a crucial part of becoming successful. It may sound incredibly cliché or boring, but very rarely musicians make it in this industry on their own. I’d even risk saying that it takes a whole village (manager, press team, friends, family members, PR and label) to lift up the career of an independent artist.

With the rise of the industry plants created by major record labels in recent years with unlimited budgets and resources to spare, building a team is even more important than ever and harder than it used to be. I know that the music industry is not exactly known for its honesty, cooperation and loyalty, but there are still good people out there who want to help. So, if anybody has ever been kind or supportive to you dear reader, please treat them well.

I have said this before, but Frankie is one of the kindest people I have ever met. She is a joy to be around and to work with her. Frankie’s team has been with her for a long time and the group is making miracles happen when they are together. Her team includes videographer and photographer Honey McKenna, multi-instrumentalist Ruby Ravelle, drummer Kirsty Pope-Davies and bassist & opera singer, Simon Pratt.

With solid support from her friends, Frankie Wesson is able to deliver remarkable results. “This Is Motion” offers a bouncing rhythm section, ragged riffs and crystal clear half spoken-half sung vocals. The track has a slight 1990’s flavour to it, something like Alanis Morissette from “Jagged Little Pill” meeting Tracy Bonham’s “The Burdens of Being Upright” and Liz Phair’s “Whip Smart”. There is a badass howling solo in the refrain and an extended passage between bridges at around 2 minutes and 40 seconds that goes into the power pop category. The song deals with the end of a relationship, loss and realization that you have been badly let down by those who you trusted the most.

The song comes with a night time video directed, edited and shot by Honey McKenna. It was filmed in Weston Super Mare and follows Frankie taking an evening stroll around the resort town. I absolutely love the indigo, neon red and blue hues, twinkling lights and blurry skylines. It is also a title track taken from Frankie’s upcoming album that will be released on May 3rd.

Recorded at AR (Alt Republic) Studios in Kingstone, Hereford, “This Is Motion” is another powerful tune from one of the most esteemed Welsh contemporary singers. I wish Frankie Wesson’s music could break the glass ceiling and be featured in mainstream music magazines, where it belongs, but in the meantime, we will do our utmost to shout about it far and wide. Frankie is worth having a sore throat. We are being part of her team as well. With the greatest of pleasures.

“This is Motion” is out independently on 15th of March 2025.
