Halloween is nearly upon us and there is a great wealth of music out there to serenade your trick and treating. From the 80’s classics (“Ghostbusters” theme, “Thriller” by Michael Jackson), through the 90’s (The Cure, Rob Zombie, Type O Negative’s entire back catalog) to the modern masters of scare such as Spirit Token or Ghost, everyone will find a perfect song to scare the living daylight out of them. Indieterria is a blog that features only new and upcoming bands and our pick for the zombie season is Chaidura. This London based eclectic artist mixing J-Rock, pop, jazz, alternative rock with heavy metal released his latest single just a couple of days ago and it is appropriately titled “Possess”.

Official bio: “Possess” tells a deeper story of self-acceptance. The true essence of it lies in confronting and embracing your inner demons, highlighting that acknowledgment is often the first step toward healing. The song encourages listeners to integrate their complexities rather than shy away from them. Musically, the song blends pop influences with Polyphia-inspired classical guitar, accompanied by modern trap beats and catchy melodies. Chaidura aims to create a new genre of pop music that not only tells a story but also takes the audience on an immersive journey.
We covered Chaidura’s music several times on our pages, and every time we are in absolute awe of how brilliant and unorthodox he is. We have interviewed him in September about his latest EP, “Temple Paradise”, so please read it to learn more. “Possess” is the latest and probably the last single to be released from this conceptual extended play. Chaidura was spoiling us for the last few months by releasing videos to the titular track, “Panic Man”, “Basilisk” and “The Light”.
“Possess” stands at 3 minutes and 36 seconds and when I first heard it, I was very surprised as the song sounds absolutely nothing like any other track that Chaidura released so far. “Possess” is a slow, very K- pop influenced number, with waltzing, pseudo flamenco guitar intro and hip hop beat with piccolo flute in the background. Chaidura has proven himself to be a master weaver of styles and genres, but “Possess” is a crazy ride into truly avant-garde musical territory.
How do you review an artist who confused some of the biggest radio DJ’s in the UK to the point where they openly asked on air “what’s going on here??”. “Possess” is a very rare beast of a single, it’s written and released by an unsigned artist yet it sounds like it was produced by Teddy Park. It’s indie, but very pop, alternative rock but definitely falls under the hip hop definition. Chaidura is Singaporean, yet you could easily confuse him with a K-pop superstar. His last song was a balancing act between black metal and anime soundtrack and now we are looking at Spanish influences, some very British dance beats and Asian popular earworms that would fit onto the airwaves of KBS Happy FM – all of this in the first 30 seconds.

It’s getting better (or weirder) from there. Those familiar with Chaidura’s previous releases, will quickly realize that “Possess” contains elements from “The Light”, “With You” and few other songs. Those snippets are faster than Enterprise travelling at warp 10 speed, but you can easily recognize them. For a moment the song speeds up (1 minute and 35 seconds mark) and Chaidura’s vocals change into his trademark semi growl, but it slows down again, to something that can be described as a 80’s boat rock tune with a saxophone solo. Are you confused enough yet? Well, you are in for a treat because “Possess” is truly possessive – it will install itself somewhere in the back of your mind and play non stop until you are about to go insane. This song is undoubtedly addictive, surely there should be a warning sign on the cover?
One thing is constant – Chai’s voice and his incredible ability to channel different emotions. He can whisper so convincingly that you are getting goosebumps. It’s almost like he is just next to you, saying things right into your ear, you turn around and there is nobody there. You can hear his pain, his anger, his desperation as he sings. He can switch between a high pitched screamo to a soft, ballad-like croon in a manner of seconds, that’s a talent very few performers truly, well, possess.
I dare you, put on your headphones, turn off the light and listen – let Chaidura’s magic work. On the Hollow’s eve, where the line between worlds is said to be thin – you may be able to feel the full scale of Chaidura’s charm and charisma. Be aware, those who see the true nature of supernatural beings, may never be the same again. Are you willing to take the risk?
