BEX – “Taste Better” single review

Good news metalheads, the nu-metal prodigy, BEX is back with her new single “Taste Better”. Described as a crazy tune that will “empower every girl”, the track is indeed a roller coaster ride through BEX’s favourite sonic landscapes: colorful and airy plains, mountains of shredded guitar riffs and valleys of thundering drums. Add her signature vocals, half shouted-half sang and you get an incredibly unique picture that is very close to a perfect one.

Taste Better” is a bit different from other singles released by BEX in the last six months (“sunDAE” and “Fight”). Not only does it show that the artist is experimenting with different arrangements and metal sub-styles, but it also promises a bit of an insight into the new material she is currently working on. We are hearing constant rumours that BEX is getting ready to record her debut album, so if she continues going into the direction she takes on this new track, then we will have a fully independent album in the UK Top 40. This is hardly an exaggeration – BEX is very popular among younger audiences, she has a fantastic following online and she appeared on the biggest festivals this summer. All of this bodes very well, even if we take into account how unpredictable and whimsical the music business can be. Fingers crossed for this young lady, when the album drops, we will be reviewing it on Indieterria to let you know what we think. And so far, we think BEX is absolutely amazing.

Taste Better” stands at 2 minutes and 53 seconds. It was co-written and produced by Sam Matlock of WARGASM (great band as well, please give them a listen if you haven`t heard them yet). “It’s about female power, fighting back against the patronizing men and condescending tones we know all too well” says BEX in her PR note. “It’s a fierce track that emphasizes female empowerment and rejecting expectations”. Well, I know of a few reviewers, and one editor of a national music magazine, who get apoplexy attack every time a woman mentions feminism, empowerment and fighting the misogynistic, shallow view of the entertainment business reducing us to a sexualized object. I routinely get involved in spats on Twitter with men in this industry who fancy themselves important and would love to see females back in the kitchen. So if they think “Taste Better” is about food, they will be severely disappointed. It is about self respect, empowering fellow women and doing everything a girl can do to succeed.

Sounds interesting? Well, let’s look at the details! The track starts with strange sounding drums and quickly progresses into a punk rock/metal core mix with scratchy, broken guitar riffs and BEX signature shouty vocals. Half a minute in and there’s the first surprise – BEX is rapping. She has done this before, but here she sounds like Delilah Bon or Tairrie B. Wait till you hear the refrain – it’s WARGASM meets Korean BlackPink – with the rage of Cassyette or Lake Malice.

With “Taste Better”, BEX is in her element – she absolutely slays on faster, more aggressive tracks that showcase her vocal versatility. You will hear her sing, shout, shriek, growl and rap. The music changes too, from some creepy marching beat to proper nu metal madness, alternative rock, classic metal and metal core. I know some blogs that already reviewed the song are squeezing BEX into the very popular new nu-metal brackets, but that’s very limiting in her case. BEX music may be influenced by Harpy or Knife Bridge, but she has her own, very distinctive style. Not only musically, we have written about it before, but BEX makes her own clothes, her own scenic makeup, produces and makes her own videos. That very young lady is a proper powerhouse! BEX is BEX, once you hear her music, it’s hard to mistake her for anybody else.

Taste Better” comes with its own, deliriously delicious video that reminds me of Alice In Wonderland, for some very really weird reason. As usual, it’s brilliantly made, BEX is known for having excellently produced and shot videos, and it’s not surprising that in 2 weeks, she scored thousands of views.

The song is available on all music streaming services and was released on 16th of August 2024.
