If I was to choose one artist that made the biggest impression on me in 2023, it would be TASH. I first became aware of TASH about two years ago when they were still a three-piece band and I absolutely loved what they were doing at that time. However, since the lead singer, Tara Noble went solo, her music became something completely different. It isn’t just a case of her new releases being very good or even excellent, she is fast becoming the leading voice on alt metal/rock London scene. There is not a single ounce of exaggeration in what I’m writing here. TASH is getting better and better and I simply can’t get enough of her music. I’m super excited to see what she will do next year.

Before this year is through (almost a month to go now), we can enjoy her newest single that TASH dropped unexpectedly at the end of November. “It’s a Riot” arrived out of the blue and it’s probably my song of the year. We had some really great tracks send to us over the last 12 months: Glytsh, Celavi, Izzy and The Black Trees, Chaidura, JW Paris – just to name a few amazing artists we reviewed, but seriously TASH is taking the top spot.
“It’s a Riot” stands at exactly 3 minutes and it’s 180 seconds of absolute rock and roll bliss. Written about a failing relationship when one feels trapped and suffocating, the song is simply a glorious, melodic and catchy as hell alternative rock sonic catharsis. Where was TASH where I was going through ugly breakups in my day, eh? I wish we had songs like that in the 90’s!
So let’s unpack what makes “It’s a Riot” such a powerful song. First of all, it’s super radio and audience friendly. Even with the occasional four-letter word in the lyrics, it was good enough to land TASH on BBC1 several times. You honestly can hear the chorus just once and you will be able to sing along. I’ve always had a massive respect for artists who can compose songs that are easily rememberable yet layered and well written. Well done to Tara and Joey Walker who co-authored the track.

“It’s a Riot” offers a truly powerful combination of electronic dance beats with thunderous drums and rhythmic bass. This combo creates something that can get people jumping everywhere, from a proper nightclub to a goth party. I know that several reviewers called what TASH does, “a gothic pop” and it’s hard not to agree with it. Her songs are pop with a hint of blood, slight madness and some feministic message thrown into the cauldron. Perfect all year round – for Halloween, alternative Holiday season and NYE celebration.
TASH melts genres with such an ease it’s a bit scary. The keyboard intros to her songs sounds like Type O Negative (it’s especially evident in “When The Lights Go Out”), choruses reminds me of Veruca Salt (check out the harmonized vocals at 1 minute mark). #0 seconds later, the music goes into semi grunge/alternative metal territory with massive cannonade of drums, only to slow down to a rock ballad with semi whispered vocals.
I really can’t imagine somebody would dislike this song. I tested it on numerous friends and family members and they all think it’s brilliant. If there is an actual living, breathing person who may not like it, then I’m afraid to say, they must have lost their taste in music during the pandemic and it has not yet returned. Poor, poor people!
Everyone else, will enjoy TASH and “It’s a Riot” is going to be played on my house warming Sylvester party. I truly hope 2024 is gonna rock just like this song. I’m dead sure that the next 12 months will be a banger for TASH. Watch out, she’s coming!
