There is not a single emerging artist that hasn’t heard about Laura Jayne and her show LoudNLush on From The Holler radio, unless they have been living under the ground with the moles. For many years now, Laura has supported new music, giving unsigned artists a platform on her show. However, only a handful of people know that Laura is an excellent singer in her own right, with national radio airplay from BBC Introducing and Radio X. Laura just released her newest single “That’s Reality” and we wouldn’t want this opportunity to pass without saying a few good words about the song.

Official bio: “That’s Reality” is a new single from radio presenter and singer, Laura Jayne. It is a sad song made to sound happy, because you can’t let life get you down. You’ve got to grab it by the balls, own up to your mistakes and realise that no one is perfect regardless of what people’s perceptions of you are. This is Laura Jayne’s second solo single following 2022’s “Kiss Me on a Friday Night” that received glowing reviews from mainstream music press and independent publications. “That’s Reality” was premiered by John Kennedy on Radio X and will be published on all streaming platforms on 22nd of September.
The legendary radio presenter and new music specialist, John Kennedy gave “This Is Reality” his highest notes of approval on the X-Posure, his now once-again-daily show on Radio X. This man knows a good song when he hears one and when he says something is truly special, then everyone should pay attention. There are several reasons why Laura Jayne stands out from a crowd of many other female singer/songwriters that fiercely compete for listeners’ attention. Excellent voice is one thing but she also possesses the ability of writing very good rock songs that have the lightness and universality of a decent pop repertoire. This is something that should never be underestimated. I know many excellent rock songwriters that fall flat when they try to compose a radio friendly song – it’s either dull like a dishwasher or too difficult for an average person to enjoy. Believe me, long passages, tempo changes and exciting guitar riffs will speak to a fan of prog rock but not necessarily to somebody who normally listens to Radio 1. This is where Laura Jayne excels. She is not overthinking, she writes straight to the point, the music is catchy, rhythmic and very, well POPular, but in the best sense of the word. You do not have to listen to the track a couple of times in the row – once is enough to be able to sing along. For me that’s a true talent.

Another thing is her songs are not simple, they are easily enjoyable but they are layered, nuanced and rich. “This Is Reality” is a perfect example of how brilliantly she writes. You want layered choruses, well defined beats, strong rhythm section? Here you go, all included. Looking for powerful drums and varied vocals (from whispering to full blown out shout)? You should be satisfied, they are right there. Serious and thoughtful lyrics? Knock yourself out. It is the second time I have reviewed her song and every single time, I’m blown away by how fantastic they are. This is, ladies and gents, is pure old school rock and roll in pop-rock clothing. I will complain a bit about the production, which is not as good as last time (“Kiss Me on a Friday Night”) but hey that’s just a tiny detail. “This is Reality” is a highly addictive, very lovely song that definitely would be suitable for BBC Radio 1.
“It’s a song about how people can put you on a pedestal and create this picture of perfection. But underneath this, there’s a person who makes mistakes, who doesn’t want to get out of bed on a morning to face another day, someone who is trying to hold on to their sanity just as much as the next person, but faces it head on anyway” writes Laura in her release note and if you are having a bad day, “This Is Reality” is a song for you.
10/10 from me, absolutely delightful, Taylor Swift-esque in places, straightforward and honest release in times when honesty and integrity are hard to come by.
