Izzy T – “Catch Myself” single review

I’m seriously at a loss how on earth Izzy T is not yet signed to a major label and on a world tour. This girl has everything  it takes to be a big star – a great voice that can shatter mirrors, fantastic stage presence and courage to speak out about what’s truly important in life. And she is a great songwriter too – her songs are loud, melodic and very radio friendly without being too pop. She is currently being played on BBC Radio 1 and receiving praise from every direction. Fingers crossed things will soon change for her, it’s high time we had a proper DIY artist making it big.

It’s been a very busy period for us at Vanadian Avenue and it took us almost a month to put this review together but today is an extra special day to write about “Catch Myself”. First of all, Izzy T is celebrating her birthday and today she is also playing a gig in London. And she will be joined on stage by two amazing ladies: BEX and Claire Genoud of Glytsh. Just last night, Glytsh (alongside About Bunny and Tom Saint) completely mesmerized a tightly packed club so if you have missed Glytsh, you will have another chance to see Claire shredding at Grace alongside Izzy T. If anybody reading this review is actually going to watch Izzy and Claire together, well I truly envy you!

Izzy’s newest single, “Catch Myself” is a perfect, three minute composition that seriously could take her to the Billboard charts. Written by Izzy and her producer Jake Magness, it is a far cry from the independent music that is popular with British audiences. “Catch Myself” is mid-tempo pop/rock track with delicate, almost power ballad passages and faster, louder rock bits – something that Americans are very fond of and really like to use in their music. It starts with beautiful piano intro, harmonised choruses and powerful vocals from Izzy (“If you don’t love me at my worst, you don’t deserve me at my best”) and then almost instantly hits you with combination of hard drumming, fuzzy guitars and a bit of synth to mellow everything out.

I grew up in the late 80’s and early 90’s – it was the time when American rock completely dominated the world music market. Today, American sound was replaced by K-Pop/neo visual kei but it holds a massive grip on new music creators. You know that nostalgia is real when kids born in the noughties are looking at the 1990’s as we looked at the 1960’s, thinking music from that era was better that the one we grew up with. College rock and grunge are still widely popular in independent circles and honestly, I think that in 2023, we have more American sounding bands in the UK than at the height of grunge in 1992. Back then, we could only export one band (Bush), now I easily could organize an entire touring festival to entertain our colonies on the other side of the Atlantic and it would have a wide range of acts playing alt pop, collage rock, California punk to grunge, trash and NYC type of hard core. Izzy’s sound is so unique because it brings the best out of two different musical worlds – the “cool Britannia” pop aesthetic is met with American rock tradition. Add to the mix Izzy’s Iranian roots and you have something truly original.

I cannot recommend Izzy T’s music highly enough. “Catch Myself” is brilliant, beautiful and uplifting – it shows how strong women are – if there is nobody to pick us up, we will always look inside ourselves and find the strength to keep on going. We are our own biggest enemies at times, but also our biggest asset and our closest allies. We have the ability to do everything we want.

Thank you, Izzy, for reminding us about it and for giving many women a voice. You said it so eloquently!
