“V.H.S (Vulgar Holy Spirit)” sleeve by Ulrich Von Trier
Some people might say that falling in love at first sight is impossible. Some others will be convinced that you must listen to a song numerous times before you start taking a liking to it. In our case, it was just a lightning bolt straight out of the blue. First, we saw a picture, showing two young ladies, one dancing with a microphone and the other shredding on a guitar, on a bright purple background. And it was such a vivid image that it automatically drew our attention. Then we heard the song – a cover of Nine Inch Nails shock tune, “Closer” that, believe it or not, when released for the first time 30 years ago, gave several Republicans a proper seizure. We didn’t get any seizures, but we utterly and absolutely fell in love with the music. And with the band too. The group we learnt was called GLYTSH and they were a duo consisting of Hella Sin (Claire Genoud) and Luna Blake (Jennifer Diehl).
Anything can happen, you just need to want to believe and open yourself to extreme possibilities seriously good music.
Since that fateful day, over a year ago, GLYTSH have released two more singles: “(Hard)Core Memory” and “SAV@GE” to really spectacular results. They were played on BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, BBC Radio London, BBC Sounds, Amazing Radio, Radio X and many other national and independent radio stations. They were reviewed and interviewed, even made it to the biggest daily London newspapers. There is nothing stopping them and they have absolutely no desire to slow down. Today the band is releasing their newest single called “V.H.S (Vulgar Holy Spirit) and the song is strong with the Force. Yep, May the 4th is Star Wars day but we will celebrate GLYTSH day as well. The tune is packed with an incredible energy, mighty vocals, dynamic guitars, thundering drums and enough power to illuminate London for an entire year. I had no idea how much intensity and strength can be packed into 2 minutes and 37 seconds and I’m not talking about decibels.

The song is not the loudest we have ever heard; it doesn’t fall under the extreme subgenres of metal. Its potency lies somewhere else – in the dedication of its creators, their skills, experience and their love of composing. I listen to hundreds of songs each month and the majority of them are really great, but they lack fire or that special spark that makes the listener fall in love with the music. My advice to all musicians is to never submit a song that they do not truly like. It really can be felt and if the creator knows it is not good, then the listeners will know it too. This is hard to explain, but it is a very intuitive feeling. Properly primordial, instinctive behavior.
Luckily for me, GLYTSH only releases songs that they are sure about and know they will kick our asses. Seriously, I need to buy them drinks, each time I’m listening to their music, I feel like I’m about to do something fantastic. I get a massive push to keep going, not giving up and plow through silly Tweets, industry plants and new release submissions.
Jennifer and Claire are excellent composers. I have said this before, but they have a very clear, coherent vision of what they want to say and how to deliver their message. GLYTSH comes as a perfect package: with self-directed interesting videos, colorful photo sessions and even matching Instagram stories. It’s very rare for artists to be able to present their ideas in a way they are easily understood by the general public. While we are often left to scratch our heads wondering what the artists had in mind, GLYTSH girls are pretty straightforward with their delivery. I think this honesty and integrity is what makes people truly appreciate them. They do not need to resort to illusion or deceit – they’re exactly who they are, and they do a fantastic job. Of course, there is a bit of mystery and magic and everyone can form their own interpretation of their lyrics or visuals, but it is a harmonious sincere approach. I like that a lot.

“V.H.S” is a strange, Frankenstein-flavored love song, a kind of sequel to “(Hard)Core Memory”, my former favourite tune by the band. I say the former as I’m kind of obsessed with “V.H.S” at this moment. I must have listened to it a couple hundred times in the last two days, basically on repeat. It is that bloody good! Maybe the band should put a warning on the cover of the single? Be advised, this tune is highly addictive, or something like that. I rarely give such praise, but the band evolved so much it’s kind of scary. Their next single may be on top of the charts!
Don’t forget to check the quirky, tongue-in-cheek video filmed and edited by M. Patsi Photo & Video with additional GLYTSH’y graphics by Sydney Butler.
So, what’s the final score? Full 5 Glytshes in the Matrix. Or 5 fully rewound original Blockbuster VHS cassettes. Top score. This is the best offering from the band yet. A true Force-sensitive track that will take you to a musical galaxy, far far away without any need for droids and hyperdrives. Word of a Wookie.
Highly recommended.
