Mango In Euphoria – “Hollywood” video premiere

French singer Mango in Euphoria may be new to the independent scene in London but she already made her mark. So far, she has released three singles (“Goddess”, “Ghost” and “Hollywood”) and three videos. The video to “Hollywood” debuted at midnight today and as you may have guessed, it is splendid. Great choreography, several costume changes and of course her distinctive sound. A bit of pop, a bit of alternative rock, dirty disco and EDM. Shaken, stirred and completely mesmerizing.

The single version of “Hollywood” debuted on all streaming platforms on February 17th and it took the artist more than a month to upload the official video to the song. It’s not a bad tactic at all if you look closely at it – it gives the song a second chance to catch the attention of those who missed it before. It also offered “Hollywood” an extra push for more national airplays. For example, the song was already added into the heavy rotation on Amazing Radio and was doing very well there but once the video was released, the plays went through the roof. It only shows how important is the visual side of music in the digital era. 20 years ago, we all watched music videos on MTV, now we are doing the same, only using TikTok and Youtube channels.

I’m a big fan of releasing videos at the same time as singles, but in Mango In Euphoria’s case, it seems that forcing your fans to wait a little, can have all the benefits in the world – better engagement, better statistics, more airplays and constant interest from the listeners, something that is extremely vital on the immensely overcrowded music creator’s market. So well done to Mango, played really smart here.

So, let’s look at what “Hollywood” video is all about.

Are you interested in fashion? Quick videography? Flashing lights? Well-choreographed dance scenes? Beautiful make-up? If yes, then you will absolutely love the nearly 4-minute-long video made by Bradley Davies and filmed by Harry Wheelwright. The “Hollywood” visuals are truly Hollywood-like. Mango is playing three different characters in it: a 60’s inspired silver screen star in matching silver sparkly dress, a dancer in beautiful yet playful half business/half nightclub attire with heart shaped rose-tinted glasses and a popstar with colourful feathers in her hair. All three characters are portrayed on stage, giving some sort of performance. The actress is photographed on what appears to be a red carpeted event surrounded by huge mirrors and blinded by camera flashes – we are made to believe this could be the premiere of her latest movie. The dancer is showcasing her acrobatic routine in a club, dancing around a chair and swinging a toy baseball ball. The popstar seems to be in a studio, shooting her newest video that will take over the world.  The moves are fast, each girl knows exactly what to do to make herself look spectacular, they are all professionals in the super demanding world of popular entertainment. Every pose is well practiced but looks natural, every look they give is meant to attract attention, every posture is provocative yet sweet. This is a hard life, a tough job but each girl knows well how to win fame and prestige.

I really like how those three characters, so differently presented, are in the end, so very alike. All we see is the final product: the actress wooing the paparazzi and the fans, the dancer entertaining club patrons and the popstar producing another smash hit. They work incredibly hard, in the ever-changing, ever-demanding show business that requires so much out of everybody: the audience, the photographers and the people performing. Once you get the taste of this crazy, absolutely enthralling life, you can never get enough. I think this is what Hollywood truly is about – an artificial taste of a false dream we are all chasing that could never fulfil anybody’s appetite.

“Hollywood” was written by Manon and Matyas Csonka. It was produced by Lewis Gardiner and mastered by Mikalojus Serapinas.
