It’s Boxing Day today and this means that we have our second guest on Alternative Christmas. Australian glam rocker, Jimmy Maddon is one of the most unique and original singer/songwriters we met last year. He made a big impression on us with his album released earlier this year that saw his songs being played on the Amazing Radio, independent radio stations all over the world (USA, Europe and even Japan)! It is our pleasure to question him about the Australian Christmas traditions, his plans for a new records and where he would like to play a NYE gig.

Jimmy Maddon by Joseph Clarke (Christmas version)
We know you love fashion and your shoes collection is probably bigger than ours combined! What fashion garments are to be found under Jimmy Maddon’s rock and roll tree?
Jimmy Maddon: I actually got a lovely leopard print shirt for Christmas, so no doubt that will help my look! I am a sucker for leopard print!
There is no Christmas without a proper Christmas drink. What’s in your drink cabinet?
Jimmy Maddon: A few bottles of red wine!
Neatly dressed, with a drink of your choice, you sit down to a Christmas dinner. What do you wish you had in the UK that you can only find in Australia?
Jimmy Maddon: 40° Celsius and a pool (laughing)
Talking about the Down Under, tell us about Australian Christmas customs. How do you celebrate Christmas in the middle of a summer?
Jimmy Maddon: Mostly the day is the same. We always had an English flair to the day, but shorts and a tee shirt replaced Christmas sweaters. We always had a huge family so a bit of backyard cricket was a staple – nothing like bowling out your dad or hitting your grandma for 6!

Jimmy Maddon by Joseph Clarke (Christmas version II)
We do not hear many Australian carols over here. Do you have any typical Australian Christmas songs? If you do, we would love to hear you sing!
Jimmy Maddon: The only one I know of that’s Australian off the top of my head is a rather rude one I learnt at a pub! Haha! However, that’s never stopped me before…
Is it true that Santa comes to Australian kids in a sleigh pulled by a mob of kangaroos?
Jimmy Maddon: 100% true and drinking beer
We have wished for your new album for a while and it is finally coming in April 2023. Can you tell us more about it and why did you describe it as “minimalist glam rock”?
Jimmy Maddon: I was going for a Stones “Exile on Main Street” or early Marc Bolan sound originally, but the album took on a life of its own, so they tend to do! I think due to the fact it was recorded at 4am, in the middle of winter, in a studio built near Bramall Lane. That feel, what we were feeling in the dark northern nights as snow was falling came out on tape and it felt right I was also trying to do something different and break away from my other sound a bit!
Last but not least, if you were to play a New Year concert anywhere in the world, where would that be and what song are you playing at midnight?
Jimmy Maddon: Surely Madison Square Garden is the only acceptable answer (and champagne out of a crystal flute!)
Jimmy Maddon is singer/songwriter, glam rocker extraordinaire, originally from Australia, now based in Sheffield, UK. His second album will be released independently on 21st of April 2023. It will be entitled “Jimmy Maddon II”.
