CELAVI – “Lullaby” Single Review

Welsh industrial goth rockers CELAVI have done it again. “Lullaby” is their third single we are reviewing this year and this is probably their best release so far. Every single time, the duo is putting new music out there, it is more polished, better structured than their previous release. A word of advice, the newest offering will not put you to sleep. It will be keeping you up and dancing all Christmas. We have been listening to it for a number of days now and it’s an amazing song for a truly festive season. A perfect, kick ass ending to a very challenging year.

“Lullaby” is a very important tune to the band as well. It is something of a dream come true for them. The song has been recorded with Romesh Dodangoda, a legendary producer for Bullet For My Valentine, NOVA TWINS or Bring Me The Horizon among others. In 2019, Gwion Griffiths (guitars) and Sarah Wynn (vocals) met BMTH during an album signing. Being massive fans of the band, having the opportunity to speak to their heroes was something they will never forget. Two years later, they found themselves in a recording studio with yet another hero, a producer who actually launched the BMTH career. I don’t think it has even crossed their minds that they would be working with the same producer that made their favourite albums, but I’m very glad it happened.  As they say, dreams do come true and we are pleased to say that the song is truly excellent.

I have been saying this for a long time but it’s worth mentioning it again – having the right producer for your music is everything. Producers are giving the music the final shape, the “polish” that makes the track appeal to the audience. If the producer of choice is not understanding the vision of the artist, doesn’t “get” its vibe then you will never have a product that you will be happy with. The dissonance between what the band wants to achieve and the song’s production can be heard and people are quickly picking it up. What I like about “Lullaby” is that CELAVI knows exactly what they want to sound like and Romesh Dodangoda is bringing their ideas to life. This is a textbook example of how the relationship between band and the producer should look like.

CELAVI - LULLABY (1)

 Single cover

“Lullaby” stands at 3 minutes and 48 seconds, the same length as their previous single “Nightmare”. I would classify it again as mid-tempo composition with soft vocals, melodic refrain and fast synth bridges between verses. There is an obligatory heavy riff at 2 minutes 10 second mark but it’s a standard for industrial/nu metal genres. The riffs are mixed with heavy, dirty drumming and broken, grungy passages a la Alice In Chains. It highlights the song’s technical structure without going into the “show off” mode that other bands find absolutely necessary to include. It is neatly done especially as the more aggressive bit fades into the quietest part of the composition with only Sarah’s sweet vocals and a bit of nearly ambient background music (2:43 mark).

The beginning of “Lullaby” reminds me a bit of Stabbing Westward, the ending of Bring Me The Horizon but those are amazing influences in my book. I cannot wait to hear the next single CELAVI have prepared – their session with Romesh Dodangoda apparently resulted in several songs being recorded. If they are anything like this, we might hear CELAVI on BBC1. So far “Lullaby” is again in the rotation on BBC Introducing Wales, BBC Radio Wales and received several praises from Adam Walton. I might not always agree with his musical taste but he is not wrong about CELAVI.

They are the best industrial/metal band Wales has and if you haven’t heard them yet, you are seriously missing out.
