Django Jones and The Mystery Men – Bad For You single review

The debut single form the newcomers Django Jones and The Mystery Men is a thing of a sonic beauty. Edgy guitars, melodic rhythm and a very unusual voice of the lead singer will turn many a head of the indie music lovers. If their future tracks are even half as good as this one, then ladies and gents, we can herald the birth of a really ass-kicking rock and roll outfit.

Official bio: Django Jones and the Mystery Men are a post-punk band from Sheffield, recently bursting onto the live scene with a screeching and energetic sound. With resounding vocals, punching drums, and overdriven guitars, the band’s volatility promises an undeniably relentless experience. Their addictive debut single “Bad For You” channels the chaotic post-punk energy of their live shows, drawing inspiration from The White Stripes, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and The Ramones. It is music written for the restless.

The Sheffield quartet is composed of Will Tomlinson (vocals), Joe O’Grady (guitar), Isaac Rodgers (bass) and Ciara Hurding (drums). Ciara was previously a member of the highly esteemed all female act, The Seamonsters that toured alongside The Hinds, The Undertones, Drenge, Bill Ryder-Jones and Kate Nash to national acclaim.

Despite its title, “Bad For You” is actually good for everyone. Standing at 2 minutes and 30 seconds, it will make the BBC DJ‘s jump with joy as they will be able to play it in its entirety without making an enemy of their producers who insist that national radio should only play 3-minute tracks. The song’s wild and untamed energy will get you moving in seconds and we know that physical activity such as dancing releases endorphins and endorphins make folks happy. Boomers and whiners will also be delighted to hear the 80’s influences in a newly released music that clearly states the young band is listening to Guns n’ Roses, Motley Crew or Foreigner. It is fast, lively, uncompromising and quite delightful – surely there will be nothing to complain about.

We actually love the shouts at the beginning of the song and the manic laugh at the end – the band seem to have a great sense of humour and is not hell bend on treating themselves as real saviours of rock and roll that the audience need to worship on their knees. Seriously, we wish, this was a double single as the song is quite short but you can always put it on repeat and let your neighbours know what a great band you have just discovered. We had it on repeat for nearly 2 hours and we still crave more!

“Bad For You” was released independently by the band as a digital single on 25th of November and already made it to the BBC Introducing Sheffield and is being picked up by several other independent radio stations. The band is also touring, so please keep your eyes on their social media. IF they come to Manchester, you can be sure that we will be there in the front row enjoying our fix of an old school rock and roll with a really neat modern twist.
