Celavi – Me Delecta single review

When we say that we support all genres of rock music on Indieterria, we truly mean it. From folk rock and grunge to indie pop and metal – if it’s good and new and loud, we will cover it. And if your lead singer is as bloody good as Sarah Wynn, then we will not only give you a review, but we will also shout from the rooftops so everyone can hear us. And we are screaming at the top of our lungs right now – Celavi are the next best thing in metal and they are Welsh. Things could not be better!

Official bio: Celavi are Gwion Griffiths and Sarah Wynn – a metal/industrial/electro rock band from Bangor in north Wales. The heavy guitar driven sound of their music is dramatically contrasted by Sarah’s soft and delicate voice which compliments their music and makes them stand out from the crowd. Following the recent success of their track “Tempest” which was played on BBC Introducing, Radio Wales, BBC 6 Music and others, Celavi are back with their brand-new release “Me Delecta”. The song discusses pressures to change who you are to different personas in order to please people. The main message is to be your authentic self.  Celavi have recently been back in the studio to record new tracks with the legendary rock and metal record producer Romesh Dodangoda (Motorhead, Bring Me The Horizon, Bullet For My Valentine). Watch this space!

Welsh music scene has always been very active. From pop icons who changed the face of modern entertainment such as Tom Jones or Shirley Bassey to Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, Supper Furry Animals and Stereophonics that dominated UK indie scene in the 90’s and 00’s. Welsh metal scene is also rich and varied – with many influential bands such as Budgie, Raw Bud, Skindred or Funeral for a Friend to name a few. It seems that we have a new contender to the title of Welsh Heavyweight Music Champion – they are the industrial flavoured metalheads called Celavi.

The band is a duo consisting of Gwion Griffiths (guitars, drums and everything else) and Sarah Wynn (vocals). There might be just the two of them but as we know, music is not about numbers. It is about ideas and talent and the pair are certainly not lacking in those departments. Celavi formed in 2018 and they have been very active since then, touring, releasing an EP named “Novus (2019) and several singles including “Stain” that gathered more than 250.000 streams in several months! Their cover of Rammstein’s “Du Hast” and original track “Tempest” won them a serious acclaim among the industry professionals and were played on BBC Introducing, Radio Wales, BBC1 and BBC 6 Music. Since 2020, the group managed to pass 1 million streams for their songs online. That’s pretty good going if anybody asks! Celavi are now back with a new single called “Me Delecta” (“He Delights Me” in Latin) and it’s a proper industrial banger that will be a perfect track for rave parties and rockotheques – believe me, they do exist!

“Me Delecta” stands at 3 minutes and 52 seconds and mixes several genres into the song. If I was to describe the mixture in percentages, it would be 60% industrial metal, 10% EDM (electronic dance music), 10% gothic metal and 10% techno. Sarah Wynn has a very delicate voice; it could easily be described as angelic. She doesn’t seem to be a soprano, her voice is lower, probably within the alt range. Of course, I could be wrong, it’s hard to judge without hearing her full vocal capacity. She reminds me a lot of Liv Kristine (Theatre of Tragedy) from her solo work – that’s really a big complement from me as I absolutely adore her. Sarah’s voice has a warm, bright timbre, it’s very pleasant to listen to and it also fits the music.

Gwion is the silent part of the band, Chris Lowe to Sarah’s Neil Tennant’s. He doesn’t sing but plays guitar and is responsible for the drums and other instruments. I’m very happy that they don’t do the tired “beauty and the beast” routine that plaques symphonic metal. You know the old schtick, where the bloke growls and the maiden try to reach the whistle register. Luckily, “Me Delecta” puts all spotlight on Sarah and her lovely voice, a wise move. I was listening to it for hours on repeat and I didn’t get bored.

There are two radical tempo changes in the song, first at 1 minute 13 seconds mark and again at 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The music slows down to electrical hum and bare synth solo only to erupt into a cacophony of distorted guitars and thundering metal drumming few seconds later

We rarely have the chance to review metal music on Indieterria but “Me Delecta” is a truly delightful break from whinny lad bands or skinny girls and their lounge seating. Industrial metal is making a proper comeback to the national radio airways and the genre’s future seems bight. With bands like Celavi leading the industrial revolution, it’s gonna be all roses, pixie dust, unicorns and rainbows.
