Indieterria meets Rob Hirst

Dear Readers

We may live through hard times for the dreamers (as mighty Welshmen Trampolene observed) but we definitely need visionaries and cultural catalysts – perhaps now more than ever. Hard times call for movers, shakers and people who will push things forward when everyone is looking back at nostalgia.

Through our blog we tend not only to support new and upcoming artists but also those who tirelessly work behind the scenes in labels, music websites, venues and radio stations.  Today`s entry is dedicated to a man who will be seen by future generations as Sheffield`s answer to Tony Wilson – Mr Rob Hirst.

Rob has dedicated years to build a network and to promote bands from across the country in conditions that would make others throw the towel in. His strength, persistence and  vision are shining though and elevated artists to better things.

Rob Hirst – a man for the job

We had a real pleasure and privilege to speak to Rob about his label, music industry and his dream band.

Musician, label owner and a walking encyclopaedia of great new bands – please introduce yourself to readers of Indieterria.

Rob Hirst: Hi, I’m Rob the owner and founder of Fans for Bands and These Bloody Thieves Records! (laughs)

It`s been a year since you have founded These Bloody Thieves Records. In that time you worked with artists such as False Heads, The Howlers, C33`s among many others. That is a truly impressive accomplishment. Tell us where did the idea for a label come from and how did you manage to make this a reality?

Rob Hirst:  I guess it was just a progression from all the other things I was doing. I was working with a lot of bands via Fans for Bands, discovering new bands via my Spotify playlists and I was scouting for others management and labels. When Ditto approached me about the label in the box within a few hours I had the branding, put a post on social media and Luke from False Heads was keen to work with me. It was up and running in 24 hours.

2020 started with a bang at the label. You just announced Singles Club – a very ambitious plan to release 24 singles this year. Can you give more information as we are sure many bands would love to get in touch.

Rob Hirst:  Yeah, I wanted to do something different this year after a frustrating end to 2019. I was bored on Boxing day and the idea just popped into my head. I put a post out on social media and the submissions and support came flooding in. By end of Feb 2020 the label will have put out five singles already with artists all over the UK.

You are the man behind the Fans for Bands project. Please tell us more about it. What exactly is Fans for Bands and how does it work? How this platform can benefit  unsigned artists?

Rob Hirst:  The name itself kind of explains what it is. This is my freelance side to my career and the also the PR/marketing brand that supports the label. The idea is to have a budget marketing (PR/Spotify and Social Media Growth) that gets excellent results based on my passion, knowledge and contacts without ripping a massive hole in the artists pockets.

At the end of December 2019, These Bloody Thieves welcomed Matthew Stockman as head of A&R and Live Events. His presence will surely invigorate the label. We are very curious what live events are in the pipe line? Showcases or maybe even a festival?

Rob Hirst:  Matt is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to discovering new bands and was an active figure on the London scene before moving to Sheffield and then joining the label. Matt will be looking to discover new artists and then give them a slot at our stages in Sheffield and looking to actively promote to new artists to a Sheffield crowd.

We know its maybe a cliché question but what are you looking for as a label? What qualities should an artist/band possess to grab your attention?  And how prospective artists can approach you?

Rob Hirst:  It’s all about the quality of the artist. Preferably discovered as early as possible and to help to support their releases. Obviously, we want to play our part on breaking a band. But the label has never been about making money. It’s about putting out and supporting great artists and to encourage people to listen to something other than Lewis Capaldi (laughs)

Music Business is not the easiest of industries – and we are sure that running a label is not a walk in the park. But it also offers some valuable lessons to us all. If you were to share some of your experiences with those who want to set up their own labels – what would you say to them?

Rob Hirst:  Yeah of course. Success will definitely not come over night. Don’t sign too many artists at once and don’t invest too much money that you will not see back. I have no regrets about the levels on money invested and lost in the first year. It was all about been taken seriously and getting a reputation so that we could then attract the best artists in the UK – Which has definitely worked.

Last (in)famous question – imagine you can create a super group consisting of any musician from history. Who is in the band, what instruments do they plan and what`s their name?

Rob Hirst:  Wow! Depends what mood I am in! I have to reform my old band and have a mid life crisis. Those musicians I played with played a huge part in my life and all led me to working in music full time. But off the top of my head!

Indieterria presents ultimate Birmingham scene playlist

Dear Readers,

The COVID -19 outbreak is hitting entertainment industry very hard. Gigs, tours and even Glasto have been cancelled or postponed. To cover loses and to reach the audiences, bands and performers flock to the Internet to perform.  There are hundreds streams and home concerts being organized and available to watch from home if you find yourself in isolation. You can stream music, buy merch or albums to support musicians though this time.

The reason for this blog post is very simple. At Vanadian Avenue we work with many young and upcoming artists, who may not have large audiences or visibility online to attract large crowd. We want to change that – and bring some new people to  their socials.

Dear Readers,

We have been planning to make this post for a while now, but due to the outbreak of  corona virus and subsequent cancellations of tours and concerts, we thought that independent artists need immediate exposure to help them. So over the next couple of days, we will be shining some light on artists that are operating far away from the  mainstream, yet their music is so wonderful, so uplifting that it is a crying shame they do not get the recognition they truly deserve.

Normally all you have to do to discover a new artist, is to simply just walk into a pub or a dive bar. You will grab something to drink and suddenly the music coming from the stage will take you to a new exciting place. You will forget about the world, your troubles and after an hour you will be on your way home, happy with a new album in hand and maybe a new tee as well. In current circumstances, it is sadly not possible – but you can still discover new music, and you can do it online.

Sammy Zalta

So let us take you for a short journey to meet one of the nicest and most talented independent artists we have met in recent months. The gentleman’s name is Sammy Zalta, and he is usually seen shredding his guitar mercilessly on stage with New York based band Bambara. He is also an accomplished artist in his own right with three digitally released albums to his name.

Hidden under the alias of Nola Gras on Bandcamp, Mr Zalta has been recording solo material since early 2014. After a few experimental, self released projects that were distributed privately, Nola Gras’s first proper EP “Living In Darkness (Under the Covers)” was released in January 2015 and sadly is no longer available for streaming but you can read a phenomenal review of it right here:

Multi instrumentalist, balancing on the edges of several genres (alternative folk, psychedelic pop, shoegaze electronica, garage, punk and of course gothic revival), Sammy is not easy to squeeze into one musical box. But this is what we absolutely love about him. He is bold and daring, taking chances where other artists do not. You may not hear Nola Gras on the radio, but once you listen to his music, there is an entire musical landscape to discover. From short noise-inspired sketches of a song, to heart breaking renditions of Tim Buckley’s classics.

“Paradiso Terrenal”

Full debut album by Nola Gras released in March 2015. It contains 12 songs, 10 original ones and two covers: very psychedelic version of Tim Buckley’s “Phantasmagoria In Two” and  equally trippy, Jesus and Mary Chain flavoured “For You” by Big Star. “Paradiso Terrenal” translates into “Earthly Paradise” and it’s a very fitting title. If you love lo-fi psychedelia with a hint of western gothic, you will be in heaven listening to the tunes. Our favourite (except for the “Phantasmagoria”) is the title track that sounds like a cross between Elliot Smith and The Deep Blue Something. It is also the last song on the record and surprisingly very radio-friendly.  Well maybe in a shortened version as it stands at nearly 9 minutes! The album was released in physical form on a cassette, but only in 40 copies and they are now all now sold out.

“O” by Like St. Joan

Released under a moniker of Like St. Joan, “O” saw the light of the day on June 5, 2017. The middle child of Sammy Zalta, is like a black sheep of the family – resembling no relative, including distant cousins twice removed. “O” is actually a very interesting entity – one look at the credits and we can see entire Bambara as a back up band plus Mike Hentz (Secret Flowers) and Thomas MacDonald (Plate of Shrimp). And the Bambara’s dark, unpredictable spirit is clearly visible in every track. It starts with “Her Patron Scum” aggressive and almost inhuman garage anthem of 6 minutes, quickly to merge with acid house inspired “Memoirs Of A Man Of Pleasure”. Title track “O” is a gothic revival masterpiece with chilling guitars and waltz-like rhythm. There are 7 compositions on the album and you cannot really call them songs – they are long, multi-level, broken into massive segments and frankly absolutely brilliant. If we were to write a short description for it, it would be Bambara meets King Crimson and recording with Trent Reznor locked up in a basement somewhere down in Georgia, no jokes about it. Almost radio friendly and punkish “Safe Spaces” could serve as the leading single, at 5:30 minutes, it is the shortest song on the album minus the instrumental “Quick…”. “Visions of You” take the listener back to the dangerous territory with a marching beat and poetic lyrics and “Egyptian Water Color” feels almost like a cut off from “Swarm” by Bambara.

In short – we cannot believe we missed it when it was first released! Maybe one day, “O” will be re-released on vinyl. One can wish…

“It All Ends the Same”

“It All Ends the Same” is the latest album released by Nola Grass on March 25th 2019. It consists of 8 tracks written by the band (all originals) and was mixed/produced by Brooklyn based recording maverick, Ben Jones (AKA Constant Smiles). The album was promoted by a Beatlesque single “Ode To Ersa” and it came with a beautiful video you can see below:

“It All Ends the Same” is much different from “Paradiso Terrenal” and “O”. It is still a very guitar driven, psychedelic in nature but also toned down, melancholic in parts. Our favourite songs are “The Wings On My Shoulder” and nearly romantic “In the Dark”. Please pay closer attention to experimental, bit jazzy/western instrumental track “One Bright Pearl” and cinematic “Just Don’t, Please”.

It is a privilege to support new music. Times may be hard, unpredictable and sometimes downright crazy, but the rock music is undergoing a real renaissance. Everywhere you turn, there is a great music flowing: from drum & bass, to garage punk, to house, dancehall and rave. We can complain about politics and social media becoming toxic, but we certainly cannot complain about the lack of good and ambitious music to listen to.

And today, we would like to introduce you to one of the unsigned, emerging bands that got our attention in the  last couple of months – The Battery Farm.

Mancunia’s premier gutter punk four piece, The Battery Farm have recently rose to prominence on the indie scene, loudly screaming at the world and its ills. After releasing a string of well received singles (“97/91“, “I Am A Man” and “Crude Oil Water“), they are back with their brand new track entitled “Poet Boy” and it’s a proper sonic kick in the teeth.

The song starts with a thunderous beat and broken, fuzzed guitar riffs that are becoming their easily recognizable trademarks. I dont think there is anybody else on the circuit at this moment who can create such a depressive and somehow deranged atmosphere so quickly in their music, but the lads have a proper talent for this. And yes, their music is depressive and sad and angry and dirty but so is the reality surrounding us. This is what inspires them and this is what the band want to speak about. If you are looking for something pretty or shiny, go and listen to the BBC1. Here you will only find a justified anger, desolate tones and 10 tonnes of unhappiness.

Yet, there is a method in this madness. Despite the ugliness, broken melodic lines, scratching vocals full of fury and disappointment, “Poet Boy” has a therapeutic effect on the listeners. Once you dig through the upper layers of noise and disturbances, you  will find a neatly composed song, with tempo changes, passages and nearly math rock precision. Pay attention to the lyrics as well – they are a very important part of the track.

“Poet Boy” is out on the 20th of March and once it is released, you will be listening to it on repeat.

Indieterria review – Saytr Play – Future

Dear Readers,

Please don’t show this review to Tom Ogden – for he will not be happy. Something is brewing on the winding streets of Manchester. Something wilder than a drunken escapade at 3 AM for a pizza slice and pinball at Crazy Pedro`s. Something sexier than the whole new season`s collection from Pop Boutique. Something more beautiful than a sunrise over the canals when you finally leave The Night People and head home to sleep. It`s unique, mysterious, ambitious and rowdy – just like Manchester itself. If you are even partly familiar with music scene up North – you will know by now what we have in mind.

Sleeve for Saytr Play new single “Future”

This band. They can`t be tamed, stopped or controlled. From the very first moment we met at iconic Jimmy`s on the Newton Street for few Polaroid shots, it was obvious that Saytr Play were going to burn their mark not only on Manchester scene – but on the music nationally (and maybe internationally).

In recent months, Saytr Play have released a string of incredible singes – “Second Hand Emotion”, “Honest Man” and now “Future”. They have signed to Lovers Music label and announced their debut EP “IN TRUTH I FEAR FOR THE HEART”. Their reputation grows  by the day and it won`t be long before they are revered by crowds of fans.

And it will be deserved. Peel away the obligatory imagery of rock misfits and you will find young people who care a lot. About future generations, the homeless, environment. People`s band if you ever encountered one.

Saytr Play ready to see what the future holds

“Future”  is a song that stems from personal experience. It’s a letter to a friend. We live our lives in fiction, pretending everything is okay; “It’s not our problem?” – says Fred Farrell, front man of the band – “I think it’s time to put the next generation first. It’s time to face reality. This song is an out-cry for the increasingly worrying number of familiar faces living on the streets. It’s an anthem for the youth, for the planet and for our future.”

“Future” is a melancholic and heart grabbing appeal to see something else than one`s own benefit – to notice another human being.  “If this is what it feels like to be the future I feel so sorry for the youth” – observes Farrell in the lyrics. Musically the single could be described as electronic indie with a Radio 1 potential. But that would be off the mark. We won`t lie – this is a very radio friendly, nearly perfectly crafted  pop record but with a heart and sincerity. Something that Top 40 is seriously lacking these days. It doesn’t feel fake or forced – like Blossom`s  recent single “Your Girlfriend” for example.

We keep mentioning  Blossoms. In 2016 we have seen Stockport finest supporting The Stone Roses – it took about 3 songs to win us over. To compare – it took ONE song for Saytr Play to make fans of us.

To give credit where its due – Blossoms recorded three incredibly good records and established themselves as leading figures on guitar scene in the UK. But you just wait till Saytr Play get to release an LP.

Small update as the single started on a high note with rave reviews coming in from every direction. “Future” has been premiered on X Radio by the leading champion of new music and broadcaster John Kennedy who described it as the finest offering from the band so far.

Indieterria meets Scarlet.

Dear Readers,

We are in February – it may still be middle of Winter but we are posting the hottest bands on the circuit. Today`s entry is double special. In recent days a blog showing lack of women on major festivals bills written by music journalist Lucy McCourt went viral. Now the biggest heads of music industry prove left, right and centre the sheer hypocrisy of almost complete elimination of female artists from this year`s festivals. The average % of places for women is 4.75% for UK and 54% for European festivals.

Things need to change but they won’t unless the women themselves will have a voice. So we went and asked Jessie Scarlet Robinson – the vocalist and leader of Scarlet. to tell us how it is. And she had few words to say!

We are blown away by Scarlet. in general – the band have been rocking the circuit since 2014 and every year they get better, stronger and louder.  Please have a read – Jessie is truly an incredible conversationalist – clear, well prepared and straight to the point. Abbie McCarthy of BBC 1 called the band “a massive powerhouse”. Please introduce Scarlet. to the readers of Indieterria.

Jessie Scarlet Robinson: We are Scarlet. a 4 piece band from the North West of England: Jessie on vocals and guitar, Laura on bass, Cai on drums and Adam on guitar.

You have been a strong part of the indie circuit since 2015. You debuted with an EP “FISHES” which gained a lot of attention from music professionals and journalists alike. It was like a breath of fresh air and Scarlet. were quickly regarded as the first band to announce revival of Riot-Grrrl movement. Where do you see yourself as musicians and artists?

Jessie Scarlet Robinson:  You’re very flattering for saying this, we have been around for a while yes and we were at the beginning of this whole female “riot grrl” revival. We were doing our thing as Wolf Alice’s old demos were being passed around… I think I personally see myself as having grown massively over these years and I see myself more now as an “artist” than I did in my late teens/early 20s. I feel like we’re developing a craft. I say all the time if we had the money and half a chance, we could headline Glastonbury tomorrow

Scarlet. has also received strong backing from national radio stations – you have been played on multiple BBC Introducing chapters, BBC 6, BBC Radio 1, Radio X among others. Your music has been described as “phenomenal”, “revolutionary” and “groundbreaking”. It’s hard to keep up with all compliments but is there any particular review (good or bad) that you remember the best? If so, who was  it and what was said about you?

Jessie Scarlet Robinson:  I got told I sound like an “ex Disney star that just discovered an electric guitar” once. I think it was meant to be offensive… but I mean, I love Disney… I can only ever dream of being as kick ass as an ex Disney star… Miley me up baby, I’m ready (laughs).

Ready to take on the world

 In 2016 you have released your debut album “Effigy” to universal acclaim. At that time, in an interview with “Fresh On The Net”, you said that this is “probably the best music we will ever make”. Looking back on the record, how do you feel about it now? Is there something you’d like to change or do better? Are you still proud of it?

Jessie Scarlet Robinson: Yeah that was a completely naive comment to make. At the time that album was everything to us. We took it so seriously. And looking back, it’s still something to be proud of and it got our music over to Japan and South Korea, so it was a very important piece to create. But we have so much more to give now. Better tracks, more experience. We are in general a much better band than we have ever been before now.

To finance “Effigy” you collaborated with Pledge Music. Can we ask about your experiences working with the fallen giant? Did you receive all the collected funds? Were there any red flags?

Jessie Scarlet Robinson:  I don’t want to go too much into this but I will say there were lots of let downs and hidden costs/charges. They kept a huge portion of the money we raised and paid us in random instalments making things very difficult to pay for and keep track of. There was lots of keeping professionals and fans waiting. In the end we didn’t have as much money as we thought (because of the charges) and had to sacrifice some of the ‘pledges’. We weren’t guided in what we were doing, we couldn’t afford funding the album and the pledges without the full raised amount. It was a learning curve and I hope we made it up to people that got stung by it. We always said we wouldn’t do anything like it again. To be honest I felt it was my fault.  I felt like I hadn’t researched enough or tried hard enough or raised enough…Then all of this information came out about them and I was like “Ohhhhhhh OK, so this wasn’t just me. This is a thing and it’s happening to everyone involved”.  That felt like a relief. I’ve never forgiven myself for not being able to do it all 100% properly. I had to borrow 2000 pounds from my parents just to get what we had promised done. I still owe some people some bits I’m sure. There wasn’t any clear record of pledges so it was all in a big jumbled spread sheet in the end. Madness!

Two years later, In 2018 you released a standalone single “Bones” that cemented your reputation as one of the indie circuit’s heavyweights. The song is four minutes of fury set to a surprisingly catchy melody. Tell us something about the track and the story behind it.

Jessie Scarlet Robinson:  It took us 2 years to recover financially from the album (laughs), it was hard graft like. The story is centred around a “kamikaze bichon fries” dog. In reality the dog is a metaphor… for an ex “boss” of mine that was all cute on the outside and vicious as hell on the inside destroying people that wanted to be good to her.  She totally tore me a new one and I was very angry about it. What better way to get over your anger towards someone’s attitude than turn them into a bad dog and tell them off in a song!

Let’s get a bit of political for a moment. It is a festival season and some festivals give women and mix gender band just 10 – 30 % of slots. Where do you place yourself on the issue? Should it be as some say – based on a talent or do we need the 50-50 split? What seems to be a rule in Europe is  harder and harder to find on festivals in the UK.

Jessie Scarlet Robinson:   Before I say anything, I’m gonna highlight, I love men. I have two men in my band. Boys are mint. And there are loads of really fab friends in all boy bands and I want them to be supported too. Here goes the rant. Of course we need 50/50 split. The only difference between say Scarlet. and the many boy bands that we’re at the exact same level as us but they surpassed us is two things.

Opportunity and money.

The boys work hard and were given opportunities. Like playing certain shows and festivals. It should be the same for women too.

Why does it seem so easy for men to stay at the forefront but women seem to get used up and cast off? For example, Kate Nash… have you seen her documentary? The way she was used up and spat out? Why does this ring so familiar within the female circle while men get to be part of the “lads lads lads club”? Certain radio stations play 90% male music and festivals booking 90% male acts…

There are so many female headliners I could list. It’s lazy promoting, lazy booking, lazy broadcasting, huge lack of effort and lack of push by everyone higher up than a grass root band.

If the girls don’t get the opportunities, they simply can’t make the money to grow their act and get bigger opportunities to get more money and the cycle continues.

What a total cop out it is to say “the female pool isn’t big enough” or “there aren’t enough females in the industry”…. COP OUT!!

Every band – male or female – starts off the exact same:  a bunch of nobody’s in a room with their mates. The only things that determine a bands success is hard work, money and opportunity. “Talent” doesn’t really come into it does it? It does a bit like, but I feel it’s all how something is marketed.

Having the money is crucial to release plans. Do you know it would cost us £300 per day in a studio to record. So let`s say: we want to record 4 track EP. Maybe 4 days will be enough, we could do a song a day. That’s £1200. Then it’s £300-£600 for a decent video made by a grass route level videographer. £700 for a national radio plugger. £700 for a good regional radio plugger. £500 upwards for a press agent… that’s £3700 for a 4 track EP before we make physical copies! Now take into consideration the cost of touring and little extras like music websites charging you to put your own music up online… You need money to market something properly. You need opportunity to make money. GIVE THE GIRLS SOME OPPORTUNITIES! GIVE THEM SOME MONEY AND THEY WILL BE ABLE TO STICK AROUND!

It’s like with radio. Why is Annie Mac the only well known DJ on Radio 1 for playing actual grass root bands… STOP PLAYING GEORGE MICHEAL AND QUEEN AND OASIS and CALVIN HARRIS AND BEYONCÉ ON YOUR RADIO STATIONS AND START PLAYING PEOPLE ON REPEAT THAT ARE UPCOMING AND GRAFTING LIKE MAD! ESPECIALLY FEMALES because we have the shit end of the stick!!

Jade Bird, ZuZu, Black Honey, Dream Wife, HINDS, Hands Off Gretel, Natalie McCool, White Horses, Bugeye, Tiger Mimic, Berries, A Void – the list of female fronted kick arse acts is so long! Why is it that all the already huge and established acts are getting all the opportunities? Why do these females get to a certain level, and then disappear from the public eye? As though they are a novelty act, a phase for everyone to shout about females in the mainstream music media, and then poof… gone and moved onto the next one… Even worse, the guys that are constantly shoved in our ears eyes and up our… noses… all play each other’s line ups!

Because they have money to buy onto each other’s shows? I don’t get it! Noel Gallagher, did you really need to support Smashing Pumpkins? What did that achieve for you? I mean come on dudes… they can sell thousands of tickets to make promoters money… it’s all about money guys. I’ve gone off on one here and I know there’s  “no simple answer”… but there is though! Book a fair gender split. Play a fair gender split. Fund a fair gender split. Work with a fair gender split. Men in big bands, get girls in smaller bands up on the big stages with you. Just do it.

According to your recent social media posts, you have three brand new songs ready to go. Is it possible to bribe you with something to learn more details or are you going to keep the secret until the beginning of the tour?

Jessie Scarlet Robinson:  The songs are brilliant. There’s an energy to them- a bounce. That’s all you’re getting out of me! Come to a show and you tell us some more details

Talking about the tour, you are ready to hit the road very soon. Where are we going to see you?

Jessie Scarlet Robinson:  Everywhere. We have loads of shows to announce and are going to try to get everywhere we have seen any sort of craving for us. If your nan likes us and wants us to play in her front room for her, all you gotta do is ask!

Indieterria meets Kevin Fitzgerald of Toura Toura

Bookers and promoters are usually working in the shadows, far away from the spotlight that artists enjoy. But they are crucial for the business and many a time they bring a real change to the table. We are very lucky at Indieterria to be able to speak to Kevin Fitzgerald – owner of Toura Toura and a booking agent for some of the best known figures in the industry. Kevin is incredible, detail orientated and he shared so many details from his work with us that we wished the interview never ended.

Toura Toura organizes Q&A (question and answer) sessions with the mighty Joe Talbot of the IDLES and first stop on the tour happens tomorrow in Manchester. So yes, we were more than excited to be able to ask Kevin few questions.

You are a promoter, a manager and a PR. That’s many roles for one person. Please introduce yourself to the readers of Indieterria.

Kevin Fitzgerald: Hello, my name is Kevin. I`m a single Dad of two daughters (8 & 5 years old respectively) from Stoke and I’m the managing director of Toura Toura. My company organises Q&A sessions for people in the music industry.

Your roster includes music mogul Alan McGee, Sleeper front woman – Louise Werner and lead singer for Happy Mondays and The Black Grape – Shaun Ryder. Do you find it challenging to work with such iconic names in the business?

Kevin Fitzgerald: I’m very proud of the roster and pinch myself everyday because of the people that I work with, especially when I have only been in business for a year now. All of those artists have put their faith in someone that they didn’t know and  who had no background in their industry. I mean, to get Alan McGee, the greatest man in music in my eyes, as your first client is just ridiculous.

Alan opened up the door for everyone that I work with now. And you know he is the most down to earth, most easiest and genuine person that I have ever come across in my life.  He does everything he can to help Toura Toura. He’s always introducing me to incredible people on the Q&A circuit – which is why I work with Shaun Ryder.

Everyone is an absolute pleasure to work with. There are no egos and all they want to do is to get the job done. Their work ethic is unbelievable and I have them all on a weekly basis asking me to book more Q&As for them because they are loving going around the country talking and meeting their fans. Shaun Ryder is a great example of that. The last few months of last year he was out 4 or 5 nights in a row because he was doing both The Happy Mondays and An Evening With tour.

I don’t find working with any of the artists challenging in any way at all.

The way I deal with things – which I know is different from most agents out there – is that I actually go to virtually every single Q&A that I organise. It not only surprises the artists I work with but it builds up a relationship with them and also builds up my relationship with the venue owners.

Toura Toura started out last year. You built a successful company from scratch and in such a short period of time. Can you tell us about the beginnings of the company?

Kevin Fitzgerald: Toura Toura was set up on the back of me coming through quite a tough time in my life.

My second daughter Sophie was still born in 2013 and then I lost my Dad through complications related to dementia on Father’s Day in 2017. I lost my Mum to cancer 6 months later, the day before my birthday at the start of 2018. Within a few months I split up with my wife. So, I had quite a bit of time on my hands which I needed to fill up and this is why I started Toura Toura.

I have been lucky enough to work in the industry of two passions of mine now, football and music.

In football, I have met many people from the sport industry, many players but I have never met anybody from the music world and always wondered how you can meet people from the music biz.

I have been involved in putting on many sporting evenings at the football clubs where you get a player to stand in front of a room to talk about their career. People at these events are mainly fans of said footballer and it’s their way of getting to meet what is essentially a hero of theirs for autographs and photos. That’s when a light bulb moment suddenly switched on just over 12 months ago. I thought to myself: “if a sportsman can do it why not people from the music world?” It`s all about giving their fans an insight into their career and their life or simply just the opportunity of actually meeting them.

I was very lucky and fortunate to have Alan McGee as my first ever client within a week or so of starting my company.

Your newest project is an Q&A tour with no other than Joe Talbot of mighty IDLES. How do you convince a fierce punk rocker to be quizzed in front of live audience?

Kevin Fitzgerald: To be honest with Joe Talbot it was just a long stab in the dark that paid off and again I have Alan McGee to thank for that.

Alan hosted An Evening With Shaun Ryder in Newcastle at the end of September last year and he was an amazing host, interviewing Shaun on stage before going into the audience to get questions from them. Alan really enjoyed it and said to me he would love to do more hosting.

I have always wanted to see the IDLES live and back in November I spoke to IDLES management who guest listed me for their gig in Leeds at the start of December. At the gig I thought the band were amazing and Joe stood out with how engaging he was with the crowd. Alan is very fond of the IDLES as well and we spoke about the possibility of hosting some Q&As with Joe Talbot. As you can imagine Alan loved the idea so when I thanked IDLES management for guest listening me in Leeds I asked to see if Joe would do some Q&As with Alan McGee. Luckily enough they both said yes. I don’t think I would have even have had a chance unless I had the Alan McGee handle because of the respect that Alan carries in the music world.

We heard that the Joe Talbot events will also include live music from upcoming local bands. Who will be entertaining the crowds on tour?

Kevin Fitzgerald: What I love about the Q&As is that we give up – and – coming bands the opportunity of playing in front of the best people in the music industry: Alan McGee, Shaun Ryder and now Joe Talbot. It`s a great buzz for these bands to have on their CV.

In the past events, we have had bands like The K’s, The Clockworks, Shambolics, Rosadocs, and The Jade Assembly performing and they have all gone onto better things.

On the Joe Talbot tour we have incredible set of artists: Faux Pas and Witch Fever in Manchester. We have Stone playing in Halifax. The Clockworks are returning to play at The Water Rats in London. Then in Birmingham we have The Pagans S.O.H and The Jack Fletcher Band.

And speaking about up and coming artists – you manage two acts: Magic Mod and The Barrats. Can we have a quick introduction of both? Nothing makes us happier at Indieterria than to discover some new music.

Kevin Fitzgerald:  Yes, that is  correct. I try to manage The Barratts and the Magic Mod.

I came about The Barratts because I was looking for various bands to invite to play on An Evening with Alan McGee. I was on This Feeling page and their song of the week was a song called “Lights out in London” by a band called The Barratts. I totally fell in love with it. They are indie band from Northampton who have an unique sound that is different to any of the other bands out there. They are amazing song writers, so much that The Sherlocks have been trying to take one of their songs. I still have no idea why they are not bigger or don’t have a record deal yet.

The Magic Mod is as indie as they come. He loves his Pretty Green, has toured with Paul Weller or The Libertines. He’s an amazing magician but can very easily entertain a crowd too which is why we have him hosting on some of the Q&As. He’s hosted a few of the Shaun Ryder nights and also the Alan McGee nights. The plan with him this year is to get him out entertaining crowds around the country.

If anyone wants to bring an event organised by Toura Toura to their town – what criteria do they need to meet and how to contact you?

Kevin Fitzgerald:  There really is no criteria for a Toura Toura event. What is unique about us is that we can hold our events anywhere from a small village hall  to a theatre in one of the major cities.

Its only February but what are your plans for this year? What can we expect  from Toura Toura though out 2020?

Kevin Fitzgerald:  This year we are planning to triple the amount of shows that we have put on and we will be adding more artists to the roster to make this happen. I have agreed a deal with singer/songwriter of another band today and with having Joe Talbot on board it takes what we are doing with the Q&A’s from the retro to things that are more current.

I would also like at some point to switch from agent to promoter.

Last (in)famous question. Imagine you have been tasked with organizing an Q&A session with the most notorious person in the history of music business. Who is in the hot seat and who is asking the questions?

Kevin Fitzgerald:  Now that’s a tough question! I’m going to make it  nice and simple. I’m a indie kid and I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now if it wasn’t for these guys. I have seen Oasis at Trentham Gardens, Earls Court, Main Road, Knebworth, Lancashire Cricket ground, NIA in Birmingham, 3 nights in a row at the Etihad Stadium, so it would have to be either Liam or Noel or both together. And there is only one person that I could possibly have to interview them and that would be Alan McGee.

Indieterria review – Who`s Misty? – Supernova

Dear Readers,

Anyone up for a trip to Lincoln? This East Midlands town has a medieval cathedral, a Norman castle, a Roman gate and a stunning waterfront promenade among its many attractions. But wait till you hear about their local music scene! Vigilantes, Sükko or, the main subject of this blog, Who`s Misty? Now this is something we gotta tell you about!

Who`s Misty – your future superstars

About two weeks ago we received an email from a band that have not been on our radar. It read simply “So we have just spent the last hour trying to come up with a great opening line, but fortunately we are better at writing songs than emails!”.  Straight to the point with sense of humour.  We have to say the band had our full attention at that point. They were to release their debut single “Supernova” at the end of the month and were female led indie trio. The single has been attached to the email to make things easier. So we pressed play and then…something hit us but we still try to determine what it was.

It could have been the guitar hooks or the excellent melody line or maybe the vocals. Or just the fact that a young band sent us a single that should have been on BBC Radio 6 playlist. If we could not name one band from Lincoln before, after few days we were familiar with a good portion of the scene and we managed to gather quite a bit on Who`s Misty? themselves.

The core of the band consists of Donald Davis (drums/live guitar), Aidan Betts (bass) and Imogen Camplin (vocals), they occasionally become four piece for live shows.  The trio have been gathering rave reviews across the spectrum: from BBC Introducing (“Absolutely cracking”- Jess Lord), BBC East Midlands (“Unlike anything else”- Hannah Fletcher) to blogs and magazines (“The band are set to rocket to the sky with their debut release. Ready for a silver screen, if the band have more songs like this in their back catalogue, they’re destined for greatness” -Chloe Mogg Reyt Good Magazine).

In a way it was encouraging that we were not the only ones who were absolutely mesmerised by “Supernova”. Who`s Misty? say they are ready to take 2020 by storm and in this case we will believe every word they say.

What Lincoln based trio produced is three minutes of upbeat indie song that could become one of Summers`s anthems. It has all the markings of a radio hit as well – from the catchy chorus to a melody line that is easily recognisable to a wonderful vocal duet at the end of the track. There is something of Wolf Alice, London Grammar,  Echosmith and Sunflower Bean in them. But also a large quantity of their own stage presence and style. It is such a wonderful feeling for a reviewer to be able to see a young band at the very beginning of their career. And it`s not that we want to brag later on how we were “first to know them”. It is a rare privilege and a pleasure to witness how artists mature, develop and go on to conquer the world. We think we know how Steve Lamacq felt when he got that first demo from a band called Cold Play.

Who`s Misty? gigs have been described as electric.

Who`s Misty? may be a young band with barely a year under their belt but they have already been performing on larger stages. Last year the band was invited to play at 2Q Festival in Lincoln. If you find yourself debuting on the same bill as The Blinders, Avalanche Party, Yonaka or Calva Louise then this is a clear indication where this band will go in five years from now.

We don’t know who is the Misty (the bands bio answers cryptically “god knows…”) but we are certain that the Lincoln trio will be a force on the circuit quicker than you can say The Newport Arch. And we will not be surprised if record labels will keep on knocking on their door. Actually, if any label is reading this – do yourself a favour and sign the trio and mentor them in the right direction. You can thank us music scouts later.

Indieterria meets The Assist

Here`s a short message to everyone for 2020 – The Birmingham scene is rocking. We are in full swing and every band is gearing to release their best music yet. Nothing will stop us. We begin January interviewing one of the best local bands that have been on our radars for the last three years. In such a short period of time, they went from playing  tiny venues to being on big, renowned stages, from hanging out in tiny green rooms to travelling Europe and Russia.

Official bio: Formed between Walsall and Birmingham in 2014, The Assist quickly made themselves a staple of the Birmingham music scene, selling out shows at some of the city’s biggest and most iconic venues such as the O2 Academy and the O2 Institute. Their infectious energetic pop has led them to share the stage with NME Award winning act Rat Boy, Manchester chart toppers Blossoms, Happy Monday’s front-man Shaun Ryder and they’ve even ventured into Europe with Black Honey. Ryan Stanton: We’re The Assist, 5 lads from Walsall, who love playing music and having a laugh. We write indie/pop tunes about things going on around us and in our lives. We thrive on making friends and taking all our mates on the journey with us that’s so far taken us from our local pub to the biggest festivals in the country.

The name of the band is truly unique. Would you mind explaining the meaning behind it?

Ryan Stanton: The name sort of grew. We all love football so we started off thinking of football terms, nothing really fit (the free kicks or the penalties). The Assist is also about us helping everyone out with our music, we’ve always got open ears for people who need a chat and everyone can lose themselves and forget about their problems having a dance at our gigs.

The group formed in 2014 and within a year you were considered as one of the leading talents on the Birmingham music scene. Do you remember when you realised that there was something extraordinary in The Assist or were you just wanting to play music you wanted to hear?

Ryan Stanton:
It all happened quite fast we never knew a thing about the industry and we came into this with no expectations. We loved the early gigs so much we could never say no to a gig and ended up playing everywhere. It was definitely us just focusing on enjoying ourselves that attracted the attention, it’s so obvious when bands are manufactured and trying to be something.

For many years you existed as a quartet but recently you expanded into a five piece. Please introduce your newest member.

Ryan Stanton: Luke Jones has been our best mate forever. Hes been documenting the band the last few years as our photographer and videographer. The band was just as much his as it is ours so it was a perfect fit. He’d been helping us out with band decisions and guitar parts in the studio for ages so it was a natural progression. We think hes added loads to our sound and live show and we cant wait to show everyone.

The Assist have impressive CV: appearances at biggest festivals, being invited to Soccer Am, touring with This Feeling, sharing stages with Blossoms, Jaws and Shaun Ryder – you must be being stopped in the streets by now and asked for autographs! Jokes aside, but are there any goals or challenges that you still haven’t achieved?

Ryan Stanton: Its been amazing to play shows with some of our heroes but we still feel our music needs to achieve more. A massive goal and challenge for us is the debut album! (laughing)

2019 was a very special year for the band. You managed to accomplish something that no other band on the indie scene have done so far – a trip to Russia. The band appeared at several concerts entertaining large crowds. How do you remember the trip and are you planning to come back?

Ryan Stanton: The trip was a complete blur we did 6 gigs in 5 days and it was literally the best time ever. We met so many amazing people and the gigs were out this world. No words can really do it justice I’m just glad we’ve got a great tour video of it to remember forever. We’d love to go back to Russia but this year might be out the question with recording commitments.

We have to ask about another international trip you have made – this time to Paris. You have played at the famous club “Supersonic” to a full house. Any good memories from that gig? We heard that you had a lot of the fancy French red wine on the rider!

Ryan Stanton: This was our first away gig and will take some beating. A lot of our mates made the trip with us, think there was around 20 Walsall lads. Hugo the promoter there is a legend and he spent just as much effort organising the after party as he did the gig!

Your new single “I Don’t Care” is catching the attention of the big names in London: John Kennedy at Radio X, Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson at the BBC6 Music among many others. Where was it recorded?

Ryan Stanton: It was recorded at RML in Wolverhampton by Ryan Pinson. Hes done all our releases to date. We cant speak highly enough of him. It’s so great when a band and producer connect and get the best out of each other.

There is a word on the street that you are working on new music to be released in the summer but you are being surprisingly quiet about it. Not a single mention on your social media or in the interviews. Can you shine a bit of a light on the matter?

Ryan Stanton: Is it a new EP or are you putting finishing touches to your debut album? We’ve always been lethargic with releasing new music and now we feel is the time to really knuckle down and get a solid debut album down. We wont rush out so there`s no timescale at the moment unfortunately.

Let’s talk about the upcoming “Discover Birmingham 2020” showcase. On January 11th you will perform alongside Karkosa, Roma Cove and The New Consistent at the Sunflower Lounge. What exactly is this project? How did you become a part of it?

Ryan Stanton: Discover has sort of been born out the Birmingham music scene doing so well. A lot of eyes in the press are on Birmingham so it feels right to start the year with all the best local acts playing the best local venue. We were asked by Birmingham Promoters who put us on the Spinn support a few months ago!

With packed performances at TRNSMT, Y Not, Kendall Calling and Isle of Wight Festivals, it can easily be said that The Assist is leaving the indie circuit for much bigger, more popular pastures. Where is 2020 going to take you?

Ryan Stanton: If you`d of asked us where we’d be st the start of 2019 we would of never said Russia so we literally have no idea. All we know for sure is there`s going to be loads more new music, loads more exciting gigs and loads more good times!

Indieterria meets Bunkerpop

It is our pure pleasure and privilege to welcome Hull`s Bunkerpop to our blog. We sat down with guitarist Paul John Sarel to speak about the bands spiritual home venue (The New Adelphi Club), their genre bending debut album and their cost friendly videos. Bunkerpop consists of living legends of Hull`s music scene and the tunes they produce are brilliant. Wit, talent and strong DIY ethics – everything that we love at Indieterria.

Bunkerpop is a band after our own hearts! You describe yourselves as “self-managed, self-released, self- promo, self everything”. At Indieterria we absolutely adore people who uphold DIY ethics. Please introduce yourselves!

Paul John Sarel:  Bunkerpop are a collection of like minded lazy fluke artists. None of this is designed to be a success but we seem to have managed to become a cult like phenomenon as we all uphold a genuine desire to entertain, make music and uphold core values that are inclusive. It’s not a coincidence that as day jobs we all work with people. We connect and we offer support in our day jobs which we try and carry across into band activities. We are Trevor Simpson (teacher), Carlos  Macklin (barman), Jonathan Wainberg (mental health nurse), Mark Blissenden (youth leader) and Paul John Sarel (youth leader).

You probably will cringe at the expression but Bunkerpop is practically a supergroup! With a huge chunk of Hull musical history attached to it. You formed in 2016 and all members come from massively influential local groups such a Fonda 500, Baby Mammoth, Nyam Nyam, The Schoolgirls or Black Delta Movement. The amount of experience, records and Wikipedia pages between all of you is stunning!  Tell us how did the band start? You obviously known each other for years, but  was there ever a moment where you met one day  in a pub and decided – let`s form a band?

Paul John Sarel:  We all knew each other from either being in bands, attending gigs or just from our local community which is based in quite a artistic and cultural zone of the city.

Some of us had played gigs together in the same bands or attended each other’s gigs in the past. Some of us played veterans football together. We’ve been around for a long time as musicians and our age span ranges from 30 years old up to 58 years old. We’re pretty energetic for a bunch of middle-aged geezers. I like to think we’re quite open to new ideas…that’s how it all started. It was just something to do, to start with but it became very exciting as we’re all from different musical backgrounds but at the same time we all enjoy taking musical risks. We had nothing to lose and it became brilliant.

Bunkerpop ready for action

Bunkerpop material has been recorded at the Gorilla Studios in Hull with sound engineer Bob Wingfield, and then mastered by Pete Maher (The White Stripes, U2). How do you remember the studio session? Were any songs prepared prior the recordings – or were you leaving it for the time when you were already in the studio?

Paul John Sarel:  The album took about a year to record. Initially we had Bob engineer three different live sessions for us where we just played our set. We then had the basic live tracks and took them to our own studio. This is where the majority of the work and overdubs was done. Mark took a lot of the responsibility on with input from the rest of the band. Some of the tunes needed a lot of changing, cutting, throwing in the bin or re-thinking. We decided quite early on to take a different approach to the live version of the band. Because most tunes we do are instrumental we knew we had to create a narrative running through the album in some way. We took a lot of time finding dialogue that wasn’t clichéd or that was trying to be cool….cause that’s not cool.

You released your double debut album in July 2019 to critical acclaim.  Louder Than War lauded you as “unique and brilliant”, BBC Introducing  said “Everything they send is incredible”, other  blogs and magazines compared you to Neu, Devo, Brian Eno and Flaming Lips. Were you expecting such a positive reactions to your material?

Paul John Sarel:  The album has a very Hull feel to it. It’s not trendy, it doesn’t conform and it refuses to take the twists you expect. It’s a bit of a “fuck off” to anyone who wants a hit record. We like a good metaphorical fight. We have a giant Hull chip on our shoulders and we’re quite feisty. I think a lot of folks can relate to that in the current political climate.

The band live is a force to be reckoned with.

We need to ask you about the video to “(Are You Ready) For Something” because it`s the best surrealistic video we have seen in a long time. A boxing match meets eating contest is an incredibly funny idea but we also heard that the band spend a whole £18.80 on the props and costumes. If that is true, Bunkerpop deserve a recognition for not only being incredibly creative, but also efficient.

Paul John Sarel:  The video did cost £18.80. We did it on a cold February morning with hangovers. Our friends Mark Richardson and Anna Bean shot it, edited and added extras. They’re both central to creative things in our community. We got Viki to be the referee. Again she’s an energetic force in the local area. When you can work and play with such talented people like them you don’t need a big budget. You just all drawer from each other’s creativity and energy. Carlos and I look very grey in the video. That’s booze for ya!

The band members are funders and curators of Fast & Bulbous’ Festival. It`s been running for  the last three years raising funds for The New Adelphi Club in Hull. The venue is known for supporting young and emerging artists, but also hosted legends such as The Cranberries, Manics, The La`s and Kaiser Chiefs. How important are independent venues such as The New Adelphi for indie circuit?

Paul John Sarel:  The Adelphi is our spiritual home. It’s shabby and brilliant. In the last month it’s hosted everything from Fat Boy Slim to a youth music gig with all the performers playing being under 18. This speaks volumes about the place. A superstar millionaire DJ to kids playing their 1st gig in the space of a fortnight.

This week there is grime, folk, post punk, country blues and high octane rock on the billing. The Adelphi is one of the most important venues in the world. It’s fiercely independent and ugly. That’s how we like it. Long live independent venues up and down the country!

There are also plans to turn Fast & Bulbous’ into a proper label. You released your own material as Bunkerpop via Fast & Bulbous’ Records. Do you have any other releases coming up or are you looking for bands and artists to release their material via the label?

Paul John Sarel:  The next Fast & Bulbous release could be out in Spring 2020. We’re hoping to put out a double 7″ gatefold with four different artists on. Each artist takes up one side. It’s quite an ambitious project but the quality of the artists means it’s gonna be a belter. It’ll Bunkerpop, Bitmap (former Salako Chap Luke), Holly Blackshaw (Crooked Weather) and Nicholas Broten (Fonda 500). We’re all top notch artists….I’ve heard the tunes already and it’s going to be a beautiful release.

We are almost at the end of the year so what can we expect from you guys in the 2020? Another album? A Tour?

Paul John Sarel:  Bunkerpop have quite a few gigs lined up and we’re booked in to play Scunthorpe, Barrow, Nottingham, Hull, Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds. They’ll be a few festivals in 2020 too. We’ll possibly start recording a new album too. We have the demos for 4 songs already and we’re writing new tunes all the time. It’s all very exciting.

Last (in)famous question – if you could book the biggest stars of pop music into The Adelphi for a all nighter. What bands would you book and who is headlining?

Paul John Sarel: Gosh….if we could choose to book an Adelphi all nighter with our heroes and inspirations it’d probably look something like this (with the aid of a time machine):

Talking Heads big band line up as headliners. Sly & the Family Stone, Fela Kuti, Kraftwerk, William Oneyabor, Can, Velvets, Roxy with Eno, Flaming Lips, Fonda 500, Bunkerpop.
